====================================================================
Hi Janis,

>> March. I still follow that as my starting month, since weather in NY
>> has been cooperative (g).

JK> "mostly" Lol.. except for temps like we're supposed to get tonight but
JK> sheets take care of that kind of thing, without letting the plants get
JK> ruined by moisture freezing on them.

Just goes to show, just when you think it's all over, it isn't.

JK> > We've not had the chance to do too much gardening since we've been
JK> > married. Did put one in, one year down on the coast but didn't have
JK> the > time to keep it up so it was overrun by weeds.

JK> Yeah that can be rough.. I've had years when I would finally get
JK> outside and had to spend quite a while weeding.. it helps when you
JK> have beds since the weeds come out so easily.

We had no idea about such things then.

 JK> > Other than that, it's
JK> > been a window box or 2 in Germany, a courtyard edge in AZ (got lots
JK> of > tomatoes, some peppers) and window sill pots in GA and the deer
 JK> buffet > last year.

JK> Oh I bet they loved your place last year (g).

They did--we only got a few tomatoes from the dozen plants we put in.
The deer got the rest--just as they were starting to get a blush on,
they would disappear. Found a hoof print one morning.

>> I understand.. when gardening starts feeling like "work", or when it
>> makes you feel unconfortable it can be daunting.

JK> > Same as he's pretty much given up on the trains; most of the set up
JK> occaisionally > bring a piece up and work on it, on the dining room
JK> table but even those > days are few & far between.

JK> It's understandable with his age, for sure.

Yes, but we can't do too much from here. By the way, we Skyed the other
day; Dad says they hope to have the grocery store reopened around mid
July--11 months after Irene flooded it out.

>> So sorry to hear about the two of you getting hit with that kind of
>> stuff. I know it was going around. We were hit here as well (well,
>> the grandboys were). Ron and I avoided the worst with lots of
>> Emergen-C (It's mega C & B vitamins, etc.).

JK> > Steve was trying to keep it away from me but just couldn't do it. At
JK> > least I had the appointment scheduled already so didn't have to make
JK> a > separate trip down to Raleigh to see the doctor.

JK> That's something.. we really find that lots of Vit. C and B vitamins
JK> help so much. I get Emergen-C from my daughter's group that buys
JK> goods in bulk from Frontier so that helps as well. If you as a group
JK> have an order that is over $200.00, you get items at very cheap rates.

Haven't found a group like that yet.

JK> > Our last cat was a hider but she'd been abused as a kitten so it was
JK> > understandable. She had her lurking spots; if it was loud in the

JK> That's the same kind of thing our kitties do when the boisterous
JK> grandboys come over Lol.. the cats run and hide and come back after
JK> everyone leaves. This picnic will be a big scare for them so I expect
 JK> they'll hide outside a lot.

I suspect I'll see a kitty or two, might end up with one in my lap.

>> different. They're not as destructive (thank goodness!!) Indy has
>> had this stuffed bear he drags around with him for almost 6months

JK> > He's beginning to settle down, having a drag around chew toy is a
 JK> big > help.

JK> Yep, he cracks me up.. he's like a little kid with it.. he puts it on
JK> our pillows sometimes (eek (grin))

Dumb dog! Or maybe smart dog. (G)

JK> > Big thing is getting it deep enough so they're discouraged from
 JK> digging > under it.

JK> Yes, you have to dig deep enough around the garden.. I forget how far
JK> down we put it.. maybe 6" I think..

>> Definitely. With porches on the front and back of the house I could
>> probably forgo the garden this year as far as tomatoes are concerned

JK> > Big containers might work for them; you wouldn't have to reach up
 JK> for > watering.

JK> Ron usually puts in a pulley system to raise and lower plants.. He had
JK> one inside as well for hanging house plants... works well. Big
JK> containers would work well also as long as I made sure the pups
JK> couldn't get to them of course.

Sounds like a great idea.

>> habits.. They balk at and rip off any collars you put on them. I may
>> try once we've moved so at least people see they belong to someone in
>> the beginning :)

JK> > Worth a try anyway. Are they microchipped?

JK> No, no one is microchipped.

We had our cocker done & my folks have their dog done, helped when he
was dog-napped a few years ago.
