They have a railing on either side of the stairs now, 2nd one was put in
last year after Dad broke his hip. It's not a wide staircase: I think
they're afraid it'll take a good bit of room out of that and the hallway
from the top around the corner to their bedroom. The hall isn't too wide
either.

Could be. I'd like to see something safer in the basement/cellar
stairway too but that's a bit harder to do.

Mostly, extra drinks are kept in it, and even so, they could be put one
or two at a time in the other fridge. They like to keep some of the
potatoes they bought in bulk in that fridge too; keeps the potatoes from
sprouting quite as fast as the non fridge ones do. But, if they would
stop buying in bulk and buy on an as needed basis, they wouldn't have to
worry about potatoes sprouting. Those they bought at the end of October
were sprouting big time by the end of December.
