We never tossed bacon dripping - it was too good a flavourant for many things -
like frying potatoes, or adding flavour to a pot of green beans - or white
beans, for that matter. We also rendered chicken fat and used the schmaltz (and
goose grease) for lots of things. Schmaltz was especially good for frying eggs.

No one expected me to live past 30 - given some of the bone-headed stunts I
pulled and chance I took. I thought I was bullet-proof or something. Then, one
day I was in the midst of a particularly nutsy thing and I had this epiphany
"What would happen if .... " and in that moment, I think, I grew up.

RH> DD> The only nod to modernity other than having electric lights and

RH> Were they on a party line too?

DD> It was a hand-cranked wall instrument - their "ring" was two longs and
DD> two shorts. When the phone company replaced the cranked wall phones
DD> with more modern "Number Please" (no dial) telephones all the brothers,
DD> sisters and aunts and uncles and cousins kept their old, original
DD> instruments and set up their own family phone system - which ran on
DD> the top strand of barbed wire of the fences - with jumpers added as
DD> needed. Both the family system and the telephone company system were

 RH> Definately rural phone system!

DD> If you saw the movie "In The Heat Of The Night" you saw my uncles Rob
DD> and Tom and Uncle Rob's son Robert at the implement dealer in Sparta
DD> (IL, not MS) they had several days work as extras on that film.

RH> I'll have to check it out, never have seen the movie tho I've heard
 RH> about it.

It was a most excellent movie - and stellar performances by both Rod Steiger
and Sidney Poitier. They used Sparta IL rather than Sparta MS for location
shots because ol' Jim Crow hadn't been run out of the deep south in 1966 when
the film was being made.
