Ärende: Books and reading
=========================
Ruth Haffly Said to Dave Drum about Books and reading

RH> DD> also do it on your baby netbook - which you already own.

RH> RH> I've also got a Nook and a Galaxy Note tablet, oh yeah, and a
RH> RH> smart phone. The latter two also have the 3 nutrition apps I
RH> RH> like to use; was showing them to a friend who's diabetic and
RH> RH> now on insulin. She's looking for ways to figure out not only
RH> RH> carbs but also sodium levels of foods. Hopefully she can get
RH> RH> them on her phone and make good use of them.

RH> DD> Is the Nook a tablet with the e-reader functionality, then? I
RH> thought

RH> The Nook is basically an e-reader only. Various iterations of it
RH> have different features but we decided not to get the fanciest and
RH> get one that will (eventually) hold most all of my fiction library.

OK, it's as I had thought, then. The only thing I've seen on the basic
Nook that I would like to have on a Kindle is the backlight feature
which will allow one to read in a darkened environment. Prolly tough on
the batteries, though. My Kindle will go (has gone) more than a month
without a recharge - so long as the wi-fi is left off.

RH> DD> it was more like the original Kindle than the Kindle Fire which
RH> DD> IS a tablet under its jammies.

RH> Well, we've got the tablet that'll give us a lot of computer
RH> functions. It doesn't have a keyboard (which is still disconcerting
RH> at times) but purchased originally for my art work first, reader
RH> part second.

Amazing how priorities change, isn't it?

RH> RH> I read about that before it was to be done, then forgot about
RH> RH> it on the performance date. Then read mixed reviews afterward.

RH> DD> There are, of course, always those who would gripe if hung with
RH> DD> a new rope. Which is why I *never* trust on-line reviews or
RH> DD> YELP ratings.

RH> RH> Take them with a grain or two of salt, some you may need the
RH> RH> whole shaker for. (G)

RH> RH> ... Books are better than TV; they exercise your imagination.

RH> DD> Or, as Stan Freberg said in the 1950s in response to a guy who
RH> DD> said "Television expands your mind".

RH> DD> "Yeah, up to 21 inches."

RH> Some folks, even less than that. Just can't see the sense of
RH> watching a really small screen--really bad for details.

Back then a 21" black & white console TeeVee was the Rolls Royce of the
fleet. And as expensive as a 40" range flat screen colour boob tube is
these days - even without allowing for inflation. The $398 my dad paid
for our first Zenith console in 1957 equates to $3800 in 2012 dollars
(the last year offered at the site http://www.westegg.com/inflation/).

That's some serious change.

RH> DD> Books are better than either movies or the glass teat - a well
RH> DD> written book lets me imagine the entire scenario in my mine and
RH> DD> build my own "castles in the air". Even a most excellent movie
RH> DD> is merely a

RH> And scientififcally proven, as per an article in the paper a few
RH> weeks ago.

Got a link? I think I am interested in reading that article.

RH> DD> presentation of the director's
RH> DD> imagination of the scenes presented.

RH> Nice thing about video tho is the demos. For visual learners, it's a
RH> lot easier to see ow to cut up a chicken than to read about how to
RH> cut up a chicken. Of course hackers will do it any way they want to.
RH> (G)

That's me - by the time they get through all the CYA gotchas and do and
don't do stuff I am bored out of my gourd and off doing it my own way.
Based, of course on what I have learned from better cooks than I and
observation over the years. Also on my personal tastes.

RH> DD> And books can present much more "back story" than either the
RH> DD> small or big screen. In addition to forcing you to (gasp)
RH> DD> think. Bv)=

RH> I do like having back story sometimes, other times I think authors
RH> get into it a bit much. Michiner doesn't use it too often but I
RH> noticed in his later books he tied characters from one into another,
RH> tho in very minor parts.

The kind of "back story" to which I was referring is the author
describing the protagonist's thought processes - which is very difficult
for a director to do without putting his audience into snooze mode. And
which takes a most excellent actor to put across without verbalising
that thought process.
