Different sorts of cherries? I can see a maximum of two kinds
even in the farmers' markets - the pretty red-and-yellow Rainiers
and the sexy deep red Bings, which to me are far superior. When
I was growing up, one might encounter a couple others, but they
are long gone in the stores, much less in ice cream.

I have since booked 20 more, all to real destinations (if you
count Rochester and its ilk sufficiently real), so now only 12
have to be found, of which I actually will need to go places on
8 of them. Maybe a visit to Hap or Clean Dave is in order in
November or December - I can easily stretch either to 4 legs.

As the pills (a bit more than 1/2" long) usually come in
individual wrappings now, it's only the partials that are
in question, and I try not to carry more than one partial
at a time (forgetfulness and idiocy sometimes dictate
otherwise, though).

There was a rumor when I was a kid that the product was
forced to include real chicken because of truth in
advertising laws: that, as so many of the facts we learned
in childhood, might have been an urban legend.

I don't think allowing for water would change the picture much -
the government tells us that mammal meat has 50-70% water, and
there's nothing to suggest chickens are that much different.

The blog article sort of implied that this was supposed to
serve as a meal for hungry hyperactive young'uns; you will
note that I classified it as "snack," though.

Mocha Fudge Swirl Ice Cream
categories: dessert
servings: 24 (4 oz each)

3 beaten eggs
2 c milk
1 c sugar
3 Tb unsweetened cocoa powder
1 Tb instant coffee crystals or to taste
2 c half and half or light cream
h - Hot Fudge Sauce
2 oz unsweetened chocolate
1/4 c butter
1 c sugar
1/3 c unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cn (5 oz) evaporated milk
1/2 ts vanilla

Prepare Hot Fudge Sauce. In a small saucepan melt
chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring
constantly. Stir in sugar and cocoa powder until
nearly smooth. Stir in evaporated milk. Heat and
stir until smooth. Remove from heat. Stir in
vanilla. Cool to room temperature. Store, covered,
in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Makes 1 1/2 c.

In a medium saucepan combine eggs and milk.
Stir in sugar, cocoa powder, and coffee crystals.
Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture coats
a metal spoon (about 5 min). Stir in cream. Cool.

Freeze in 4- to 5-qt ice cream freezer according
to manufacturer's directions. Remove ice cream
paddle. Stir in 1 c of the Hot Fudge Sauce just
until swirled.

Serve with additional Hot Fudge Sauce, if desired.

Notes: Homemade ice cream tastes better and melts
more slowly if it is ripened before serving. To
ripen ice cream in a traditional-style ice-cream
freezer, after churning, remove the lid and dasher
and cover the top of freezer can with waxed paper
or foil. Plug the hole in the lid with a small
piece of cloth; replace the lid. Pack the outer
freezer bucket with enough ice and rock salt to
cover the top of the freezer can, using 4 c ice
to 1 c salt. Ripen about 4 hr. When using an
ice-cream freezer with an insulated can, after
churning, remove dasher; replace lid. Cover the
lid with ice and cover with a towel.

Prepare ice cream; transfer to freezer container.
Seal, label, and freeze up to 2 weeks.

M's note. One could substitute vanilla for the
coffee crystals.
