ML>> So how is a hole in the ground supposed to revitalize downtown?
NB>> Yeah, I know... the emperor's new clothes syndrome... There's
NB>> finally a new (but much smaller) building in place...
ML> No public passage to the next sheltered spot, I presume.
 ML> Kind of shortsighted.

One can always walk out in the open air, on sidewalks and such... ;) We
don't have nasty weather all the time... (G) Ironically, as I type, we
are under a Blizzard Warning, started at 5am this morning and runs to
5am tomorrow morning... threats of a foot to almost 2 of snow, lots of
blowing... schools and events cancelled... I'm not seeing it quite as
bad as threatened, but I'm glad enough to not be out in it... ;) Looks
like we might have 4-6 inches so far... just guessing from looking out
at the cars... ;)

NB>> As far as I know, some of those small shops in the lower
NB>> levels still exist... and there is some access from one building to
NB>> another in some instances, just not the network that there was at one
 NB>> time...
ML> So why don't they try again?

They might... Probably depends on funding, interest, and vision...
perhaps not in that order... ;)

ML>> Funding? Call it investment instead. How shortsighted.
NB>> We're talking politics at work here... The approvals were slow, so
 NB>> the investors dropped out...
ML> Ah, yes. I can't have my way, so you don't get your permits.
ML> Makes me feel like going over to the Drum view of the world.

I hear you. We have one party controlling the county government, the
other party controlling the city government... and they need to be
working together to make these major city projects actually work...
usually, as one might expect, they are at odds, either on the broad
aspects or the details... or both... I tend to just shrug... not much I
can really do... and while some things that don't happen would have been
nice, some are just as well that they don't... ;)

ML>> of at least .30 caliber if you leave the city limits, but
ML>> the critters occasionally invade town, and the unarmed
ML>> duck and cover). Okay, I am as crazy in my way as she is in
ML>> hers and would go there if alone.
NB>> So stay in the city limits and duck for cover if the critters show
 NB>> up...?
 ML> That's the usual course. But we're talking about a $2000
ML> ticket in coach, and I'm not supereager to do that.

Base reality interfering with bucket dreams... ;) Of course, it's her
dreams, not yours... ;) The price tag would deter me... though the
locale is intriguing... At one point, we had been kinda dreaming about
a multi-stop round the world trip... visit all kinds of friends in all
kinds of places, but bald reality in the form of an out-of-reach price
tag nipped that in the bud... Richard wasn't quite as enthusiastic as
Robert and I... ;)

ML>> By the way, it's colder and snowier here now than in Longyearbyen,
ML>> but there aren't any polar bears, just hyenas and jackals.
NB>> And where is here...? ;) (From the comment below, I'm guessing MD?)
ML> Here was Washington, I think, but I've lost track.

That makes sense... both... ;)

ML>> Veering off on a tangent, I knew a guy who applied for
ML>> the music directorship of the Nashua Symphony and was
ML>> certain he'd get the job because his name was Nash.
 ML>> He got the job.
NB>> Probably his name had little to do with it... Would he have been
NB>> likewise as certain about getting a job with Nashville...? ;)
ML> I don't know, perhaps, though. He wanted to be within
ML> commuting distance of his home on Cape Cod, though.

So he wouldn't have applied that far south... ;)

ML> We do generally pretty well, but I had my doubts when she
ML> was served lamb when promised beef, and she didn't throw a
ML> fit, but she did throw a fit on Sunday night two hours after
ML> dinnertime when the roast pork was off at this little
ML> Bierstube. She had a burger instead, and that appeased her
 ML> somewhat.

Was that two hours after dinnertime also an indication of having gone
without food for extra long...? That can make folks less amiable, more
grumpy, less likely to roll... ;) Good thing there was a burger handy
to fill in... :) Was the lamb tasty...?

ttyl neb

... A good breakfast is no substitute for a large dinner.
