Back in the day we used to do it in a paper milk carton. But, it's been a long,
long time since I saw a half-gallon paper milk carton. And, living single, I
pretty much cook what I will eat at a given meal - on the occasions I eat at
home. But, I do have a plastic container with a snap on lid that came from a
10# batch of store-bought macaroni salad. It's about 1/3 full of various veg
submerged in water (now ice). When it gets as full as I'd like I'll chop some
meat (pork, beef, venison, etc) that has been cooked and left overs wrapped in
tin foil and frozen to add to the vegetable broth and we'll have soup. Probably
for a week, knowing me.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06
 
      Title: Doug's 'twasn't Soup
 Categories: Soups, Pasta, Beans, Vegetables, Chilies
      Yield: 6 servings
 
      1 tb Olive oil
      1 lg Sweet onion; diced
      6 cl Garlic; minced
      2 lg Carrots; minced
      3    Ribs celery; diced
      1 lg Red bell pepper; cored,
           - diced
      3    Habaneros; cored, chopped
           - fine
     10 oz Can Ro-tel tomato w/chilies
      4 c  Vegetable stock
    1/3 c  Pearl barley
    1/2 c  Dry macaroni
     20 oz Can Romano beans; drained,
           - rinsed
      1 ts Oregano
      1 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Jim C's smoked red Savina
           - powder (use more at your
           - peril!)
           Chopped fresh parsley;
           - sprinkled over
 
  When my better half read this sorta recipe out to me,
  laughed and said " you should be able to improve on this"
  I read it, and said" No problem!" Here is the result!
  
  In a large pot, heat the oil, and add the onion, garlic,
  peppers, carrots, celery, habs, and simmer until onion is
  transparent. DO NOT BURN THE GARLIC!
  
  Add the salt and oregano, and simmer some more, then add
  the Ro-tel, and the stock, and then the barley, beans,
  macaroni, and let this cook for as long as it takes to
  remove most of the liquid.
  
  This WAS supposed to be soup. Hah! When it looks as though
  it can be eaten from a plate, add the seasonings, add some
  water if it looks too dry,
  
  Make tea biscuits to serve with it, and serve in pasta
  dishes, the wide ones. Spectacular!!! I was informed by
  She Who Knows, to do it again!
