===============================
Hi Michael,

ML> Ain't it the truth. Either the cost of the ingredients is too
 ML> high or the short production didn't garner enough interest;
RH> Even common things like one brand of powdered milk. Still produced but
RH> carried for a while in the commissary, then abruptly discontinued. I
RH> think the one brand of all in one sheets of detergent & fabirc
RH> softener are still going but haven't seen them in any stores we shop in
 RH> this area.

ML> The commissary probably carries only the one brand of each
ML> product that can be gotten at the most advantageous price.

No, they actually carried several brands of most things. You might find
Hunt's, Contadina and Del Monte tomato paste and sauce, a cereal aisle
that rivals any outside store and enough different brands of peanut
butter to really glue your mouth shut. They also experimented with the
back & white generics in the mid 80s and had tehir own line in a number
of assorted products.

ML> Detergent and fabric softener I don't know anything about,
ML> but you could look the brand up on the Internet and maybe
ML> find out the nearest vendor (and whether it's worth your
ML> time and effort to go there).

If I could remember the name now. I remembered it while I was writing
but have forgotten it again. It's not that important anyway. One version
had optical whiteners which we weren't supposed to use on uniforms so
we'd buy both types.

ML> to be caviary to the million.
RH> Probably plenty of people with similar tastes to yours, just not all
RH> concentrated in one area. Doesn't pay manufacturers to ship a few of
RH> their product to many different areas instead of just one.

 ML> True - that's where online shopping comes in. I don't do
ML> it much for hard products anyway, but that's because there
ML> are few if any that I can't do without.

I look, but don't usually shop, on line. Too tempting to get really
sucked in and shoot the food money for the month on other things.

RH> Steve has tried the chili, and found it wanting compared to what I
RH> make but will still get it from time to time. Usually he goes for a
RH> sweet potato and some sort of vegetable. I usually carry a generic
RH> Lact-aid or 2 for him so he doesn't have to skip the dairy.

ML> By chili standards, maybe it's not the greatest, but
ML> compared to other sides on the menu, I'll take two hits
 ML> of it.

I can find other sides that are more appealing, but, that's my tastes vs
yours.

RH> I know, sometimes you need to do the clean up to make sure it's done
 RH> to your satisfaction.

 ML> My satisfaction is different from others' satisfactions;
ML> it's olfactory and tactile rather than visual, not a
ML> surprise given my strengths and weaknesses. To me a
ML> surface or an item is clean if it smells of nothing and
ML> feels residue-free. A lot of people don't mind if

I go by appearnce, smell and feel for cleaning up. The counter top redo
that Steve did gave them a false marble appearance. We really have to be
careful where we set down things like bread closures to make sure we 1)
can find them again and 2) they don't accidentally get swept into the
the trash.

ML> something ends up slightly soapy (or worse, detergenty),

I give things a good rinsing.

ML> but that drives me up the wall. And there are things
ML> where I clean to different and lesser standards than
ML> normal, especially wooden cutting boards, where I avoid
ML> using anything but hot water and salt, lest off-flavors

Wood doesn't get soap, nor much water.

ML> soak in, and pot and pan bottoms, which I prefer black
ML> to shiny, because I often aim for maximum heat transfer
 ML> when I cook.

I buy heavy pots/pans--I don't like the light weight ones.

Catch you later,
Ruth
