NB>> associating particular cuts with their original placement on the
NB>> animal could be as foreign as the idea that food comes from farms... ;)
NB>> As basic and fundamental as those concepts are, even... :)
ML> Oh, you mean "blonde." Speaking of cruel but often not
 ML> unfunny humor.

Blonde's a state of mind, not a color of hair (or gender, for that
matter)... (G) I suppose that probably does also encompass being
oblivious and uninformed... ;)

 NB>> Bacon's good... :)
ML> Makes everything better. For the following recipe, I'd
ML> blanch the broccoli first (strongly preferring a mild
ML> crunch to the splintery one that raw vegetable provides)

It also can make it a little more digestible...

ML> and use a different dressing (not wanting to wake my
 ML> sleeping diabetes tiger).

Maybe just use less sugar....?

NB>> Laughing at others is usually cruel... laughing with others usually
NB>> not so... Poking fun at others, making them the butt of jokes, I
NB>> find just wrong, and mean...
ML> I don't see the point. Or rather, I do too keenly, having
ML> periodically attracted that kind of attention.

Likewise... or seen it directed at friends of mine...

ML> Problem with gentle humor is that it is so often not so
ML> gentle as it pretends to be - or that it can be taken
 ML> as not so gentle.

Truly gentle humor takes into account how it is being received... But, I
hear you on that, since I've also known people to say that they are
using gentle humor, which one can really wonder how gentle it really
was, or was really intended to be... Sometimes it's merely less harsh
than that person's humor normally is... or should that be "humor",
there...

ML>> Practical so-called jokes I pretty much abhor and cannot
 ML>> find any justification for.
NB>> Totally agreed, and likewise abhorred... not humorous, usually
 NB>> cruel and uncalled for...
ML> Almost always cruel. Seldom funny. Never justified.

Quite.

ML>> Now who does the social work training in your city?
NB>> Not sure. Closest might be at Geneseo, or at one of the community
NB>> colleges, maybe.. Buffalo and Syracuse have MSW programs.
ML> Largely deprofessionalizing the profession then.

Our local community colleges are taking over some of the professional
training... Monroe CC has one of the good nursing programs locally,
along with UR and Roberts Wesleyan...

NB>> One of the really special things about the RIT program had been
NB>> that a BSW from there was practically equivalent to an MSW from
NB>> most places... and recognised as such.
ML> On the other hand, that bespeaks a situation that should
ML> not obtain in a professional situation, where credentialing
ML> ambiguity can creep in (thinking of my friend and his two
 ML> non-master's degrees).

Depended on where one was getting employment... I know that a number
went on to get their MSW anyway... and reported back that they'd learned
most of it already from RIT and their placements during...

ML> But I can think of two close to home
ML> situations that are pretty similar - my high school, where
ML> one of our honor students decided for reasons unknown not
ML> to try for any of the high-priced-spread colleges and was
ML> admitted to the state university, a good one, based on the
ML> reputation of our school (with the backing of board scores
ML> of course), with junior status.

Lots of reasons not to go for the high-priced-spread, one of which being
ability to pay for it (scholarships/grants not being totally ubiquitous,
and some wouldn't want to be saddled with loans). The piece of paper is
of less worth than the actual ability of the person... heresy, I know...

ML> Number two, of course, is
ML> my college, at whose name people still genuflect in some
ML> influential circles, and I think unwarrantedly. The proctor
ML> (dorm resident) freshman year was fascinated by this
ML> phenomenon and being a historian researched stories of the
ML> glory days when just having an ID ("bursar's card" up through
ML> my years there) bearing the illustrious name guaranteed an
ML> instant line of credit in places as far away as New York.

I can see why the proctor was fascinated by that... :)
