Monday is Queen Victoria's birthday, a Canadian stat holiday. So
we all get to enjoy the first of the three day weekends of summer.

In southern Canada it is traditionally the weekend to do things like
plant a garden and open up the summer cottage. Up here our plans are
a bit more modest: fire up the grill for the first time and watch
the last snowbank melt away. (I still have a little snow left in my
yard.)

Last night the Yellowknife and Hay River branches of the Minault
clan gathered at Matthew's place for the first BBQ of the year.
There were fifteen of us in total and it was a bring a dish, casual
affair. Roslind made 2 dozen hamburger buns and a dozen hot dog
rolls. I brought a bottle of Copper Moon Shiraz (from Kelowna B.C.,
one of Andrew Peller's value priced brands). Over the course of the
evening we had a series of five courses: first some freshly caught
grilled whitefish, then a round of smokies on buns, then burgers,
followed by steaks and for those who dared, ice cream and cupcakes.
The sides consisted of a nice variety of green, pasta and potato
salads, plus vegetable crudities and a large assortment of pickles.
Besides my shiraz there was some sort of white wine to be had and
plentiful beer. 

Victoria Day is also my signal to retire the dark and strong
whiskies of winter and bring out the lighter gins and rums of summer
for some long cool citrusy drinks.

 Categories: Alcohol, Beverages
      Yield: 1 Serving
 
      2 oz White rum
      1 oz Midori liqueur
      1 oz Cointreau
      1    Squeeze lemon juice
           Sparkling lemonade or
           7-UP or soda water
           Ice

  Build in a tall glass (anywhere from a Collins to a Hurricane
  glass depending on the amount of carbonated mix added), adding 4
  to 16 oz mix to taste and stir briefly.
