Ärende: HY-VEE was: ALDI @ China-Mart

Dunno. The self-congratulatory and "Welcome to Town" stuff will evaporate. For
the rest .... They only just opened on May 15. Working next door north
(literally) I often curse the traffic that they have generated when I want to
pull out of our parking lot. And their parking lot is *ALWAYS* full during the
usual hours .... and pretty full as late as 11 pee em (it's a 24 hour store)
and as early as 5 ayem.

I haven't been inside the store yet - but, I did buy gas for the company truck
at their attached gasoline facility - it was 15c/gal less than even the
El-Cheapos in town - the pay-at-the-pump part is available 25 hours also.

I heard some people whinging about some of Hy-Vee's prices being high on some
things. I commented to one group of those whiners "Didn't your Mommies teach
you how to SHOP? No one is pulling a gun on you to make you buy everything in
one store."

RH> We get Aldi's, Harris Teeter, Lowe's and Food Lion on Wednesdays, the

RH> for a while, took a lot of their business. I think that's slacked off
RH> now since folks can't do the one store for everything at Aldi's.

See my comment above about buying it all in one place.

DD> That's the new business model for ALDI - apparently their bean
DD> counters think it's working for them. Me, I'd rather they left the
DD> stores closer to the centre city. Especially as I don't shop
 DD> China-Mart on principle.

RH> I know, but some things we can't get elsewhere or have more of a
RH> distance to go to get them.

See my comment above about buying it all in one place. Of course one has to
balance the time and transport cost against the savings of shopping around.
But, a smart shopper knows where the prices are best and works out a
route/schedule for getting in on those bargains.

RH> Got to go where they can get the space too.

DD> But, the ALDI stores here were in well established locations and going
DD> a pretty good business (nearly always a two or more person line at the

 RH> Raleigh has a couple of Aldi's but it's 20 miles away. One's in a semi
RH> residential area, the other is on a major road in a plaza with a number
RH> of other stores. Not sure if either of them are on a bus line.

DD> On the other hand Nieman's County Market opened a 24 hour smaller
DD> pattern stupormarkup close to downtown and within a short trudge of a
DD> lot of low-income and public housing ... not to mention the medical
DD> district. They are picking up some of the slack left by ALDI running
DD> off to the countryside - and making a good profit whilst they are at
 DD> it.

RH> Somebody will move in and make money. Up where my folks live, the
RH> Dollar General started selling a lot more groceries after Irene took
RH> out the only grocery store in town. Not the best location as it's not
RH> really walkable by the infirm but it was back up and running long
RH> before the grocery store was. I"m not sure if they are still carrying a
RH> lot on the grocery line or if they cut back after the grocery store
 RH> reopened.

It's a "shelf-space" battle. If they got some people habituated to buying
grocery items from them and the merch continues to turn over at a decent clip
they will probably continue to stock it. Especially as $$ General can likely
offer better pricing than an independent grocer - due to their bulk buying
power.
