Unfortunately, there is no way to check. If there is no way to verify
what was used, then it is hard to enforce. In garrison, it does not make
a difference. On the battlefield, it might make the difference in one's
survival.

If you were to look at two shirts, one which had been laundered with and
one without brighteners, under ultraviolet light, you would see the
difference.

Since I'm writing this post-picnic, I think I ought to post the two main
ingredients for the trifle again.

Title: Light Angel Food Cake
Yield: 1 Batch

Ingredients

12 ea egg whites (large eggs)
1/4 c cornstarch
2 1/4 c powdered sugar
3/4 c whole wheat flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla or almond extract
1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar

Instructions
---

First mix 1 1/4 cups of the powdered sugar with the wheat flour and
cornstarch in a small bowl and set aside. Then separate the egg whites
completely, add salt and cream of tartar to them and whip on high
speed until the egg whites stand in peaks. Switch mixer to low speed
and gradually add 1 cup powdered sugar plus flavoring. Stop the mixer
and sprinkle in 1/3 cup of the flour mixture. Blend lightly
again,adding the remaining flour mixture. Blend only until mixed. Pour
into angel food cake pan. Bake on 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes or
until done.

First, the baking time is variable. It took 40 to 50 minutes to be
done. Cooling should be done inverted (use a bottle or something to hold

Ingredients

2 cups milk
1/2 cup white sugar
1 vanilla bean, halved lengthwise
6 egg yolks
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 pinch salt

Instructions
---

1.   Place the milk, half the sugar and the vanilla bean in a saucepan
over medium heat.
2.   Combine the egg yolks and the remaining sugar in a bowl and whisk
until light in color. Add in the flour and the salt, mix to combine.
3. When the milk just begins to boil, remove from heat and remove
vanilla bean. Very slowly dribble the hot milk into the yolk mixture,
stirring all the time. When about half of the milk has been added, place
all of the yolk mixture into the saucepan over medium heat. Using a
spatula or a whisk, mix the pastry cream as it heats, making sure to
reach all of the corners of the pan when you stir. Bring the mixture to
a boil. Let boil for about 1 minute, stirring constantly. The mixture
will be thick.
4.   Remove from heat and add the butter. Strain if you wish for a
smoother cream. Place into a bowl and cover directly with plastic wrap
to stop a skin from forming on the cream. Chill and use within a few
days.

substitute 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for the vanilla bean, adding
it after the pastry cream is removed from heat."

For Trifle, double the recipe for the Pastry Cream. Cut cake and layer
with pastry cream and fruit. Finish top with pieces of fruit arranged to
look attractive.

For the picnic, the fruit was strawberries and blueberries. Tropical
fruits (such as Pineapple, Mango, Banana, etc.) also work well.
