Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> I'm like that with a number of things that I had to eat as a
NB> child... NB>> but there are some people that that doesn't happen
 NB> with... :)

RH> Some things I had as a child I appreciate more as an adult. I've been
RH> able to tinker them to suit my tastes instead of having to eat them
RH> either "as is" or with what my parents considered best to go with
 RH> them.

NB> I was thinking more of things like powdered reconstituted milk for
NB> drinking, margarine instead of butter, saccherine instead of sugar,
NB> that sort of thing.... Other things I've been able to tinker with to

We used powdered milk for a number of years with the girls without
complaint. Also used a combination of margerine and butter, I was raised
on the former (not sure about Steve). The only saccerine was the liquid
stuff my folks used for iced tea--I thew out a bottle 4 years ago that
had been around since the mid 60s. We used Equal for a while, now have
gone with Stevia when we don't use sugar (or as part of the sugar
total).

 NB> make
NB> them better, like liver... or use healthier versions, like brown rice.
NB> Grew up with whole grain breads, though, so that didn't change... :)

I grew up with white bread and rice, the occasions Mom cooked rice. She
sometimes made chop suey (maybe once every 3-5 years) and made white
rice with that. It also went into her turkey soup. I replaced both the
rice and bread with healthier versions after getting married.

RH> Oatmeal is one example--as a kid, I was only allowed about a
RH> teaspoon of brown sugar and maybe 2-3 tablespoons of milk on it. Pre
RH> diabetes I ate it with more sugar (about a tablespoon), raisins (a
RH> couple of tablespoons worth), and cinnamon, no milk

NB> Our oatmeal always had the raisins added to the water before the
NB> oatmeal went in, so cooked and plump as part of the deal... plus brown
 NB> sugar
NB> atop. I think butter (well, margarine) and milk (that "funny" stuff)
NB> were options... :) Now I add cinnamon as well to the oatmeal...
NB> that last, by the way, is very good for keeping blood sugar where it
 NB> belongs... :)

My dad doesn't like raisins so putting them in the oatmeal or cream of
wheat cooking water was a no go from the start. Don't know why cinnamon
wasn't added, I suspect Mom probably never even thought of it. And yes,
I've been taking cinnamon capsules ever since I was diagnosed with the
diabetes.

RH> Other things I had, I either haven't let them into my kitchen or
RH> haven't eaten them by choice if they are in the house. American cheese
RH> slices are in the first category, peanut butter in the second. Steve
RH> and the girls like peanut butter so I keep it in the house but don't
RH> eat it. He doesn't like the non cheese cheeses either so we don't buy
 RH> them.

NB> Yeah, it helps when one's spouse agrees with the food choices (or
NB> non-choices)... Richard and I are pretty close there, too... :)

I think most couples (that stay together) end up being in agreement on
food choices or non choices. I can see it in my folks and my in laws.
