============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> RH>> I might pick up a bit of okra to pickle at Saturday's market.
NB> NB>> Pickled okra sounds pretty good... :) But then, I like okra,
NB> NB>> even when it's the proverbial slimy veggie... (G)

RH> I like it too and will have Steve pick some up at the market tomorrow.
RH> We'll pick up some dill seed and (may need to get more cider vinegar,
RH> depending on how much he gets) do the okra on Monday. He may try a pod
RH> or two but I'll enjoy most of it.

NB> Did it all get made into pickles...? ;)

Made 5 pints of pickles, sitting in a box for a few weeks to develop
their flavor before cracking open a jar. Since Steve doesn't like it I
pickled all he got.

RH> Market day is tomorrow but I'll be cooking for Life Group. Steve will
RH> pick up the okra and whatever else he thinks looks good. It's also
RH> supposed to be rainy, another good reason to stay home and work on the
 RH> meal for Sunday.

NB> Good enough reasons for me... ;) As long as he's willing and able
NB> to do it alone, you might as well stay and take care of business...
 NB> ;)

He did well. The American Legion tent had several leaky spots so they
didn't set up. He was home early, which was good since we had a rather
busy day.

NB> NB>> Is the state market in Raleigh, then...? Our public market

RH> Yes, the state market is in Raleigh, runs pretty much year round.

NB> As does our public market...

Our local one does too, but with reduced hours and vendors in the
winter. The Raleigh one only closes on Christmas I believe.

NB> usually NB>> didn't sell out too quickly... it's just way too packed
NB> with people NB>> on Saturdays, though, to make it fun anymore...

RH> No fun. We're getting squeezed out by a used car sales place taking up
RH> more and more of the lot. We may move the market next year to another
RH> location as it's now more vendors in less space than when we started
RH> with this lot last year.

NB> Have to find a lot that is less likely to become encroached upon, I
NB> guess... That was probably part of the reasoning behind the Westside
NB> neighborhood farmers' market, they partnered with one of the churches,
NB> and borrow their parking lot...

Good deal for the church. Ours isn't big enough to support the number of
vendors plus people needing parking spots.

NB> NB>> When I go out to my sister's (or the vicinity), I pass by a farm
NB> NB>> market... I've stopped there at least once, and got some nice
 NB> stuff...

RH> Nice, where does she live?

NB> Bloomfield... about 6 miles from Canandaigua, and about the same from
NB> Victor (where the two shorter legs of the triangle meet)... a good
NB> 40-45 minutes from my house...

OK, I know the general area. It's, sadly, been in the news too much the
last few days.

NB> NB>> but it's kinda far for regular, and often when I'm passing by I
NB> NB>> couldn't really take the time to stop... there's another one
NB> right on NB>> my path for something else (a once a month dealie
 NB> usually), again

RH> Once a month is hard, especially since produce doesn't keep that long.
RH> The weekly market ensures a good turnover of fresh produce.

NB> Exactly. At least Wegmans makes a point of partnering with local
NB> farmers to bring fresh produce into the stores, so it can be just
 NB> about as good... :)

A lot of our area stores partner with local farmers. For sure, I know
Lowe's, Harris Teeter, Whole Foods and The Fresh Market do. Wal-Mart
does it some, don't know about Food Lion or Super Target.

NB> I just cooked up a bunch of things needing attention... green and gold
NB> summer squash, eggplant, mushrooms, and garlic... sauted an onion with
NB> the last two, nuked the first three together (sliced and/or cut), then
NB> mixed them all together along with a can of diced tomatoes... Served
NB> them last night with some quick pan-fried marinated chicken thighs,
NB> and put the pot onto the stove to simmer for a long while to really
NB> get the flavors to meld... Ratatoillie-ish... ;) I've got some
NB> somewhat spicy sausages in the freezer that will probably go with the
NB> rest of it, in a couple of days... :)

NB> Patty pan squash doesn't show up here for at least a few more weeks,
NB> I'd guess.. that's always something local when it shows up in the
 NB> stores...

Buying local is best, you get it a lot fresher than if it were trucked
across the country. Buying it at the farmer's market, you get to know
the farmer that grew it.

Catch you later,
Ruth
