Ärende: What's in your Trolley?

NB> That seems to be a modern strategy... move away from the low-rent

NB> and I suppose garner more of the "richer" people that apparently don't

OTOH County Market (Niemann's) have opened an urban neighbourhood store near to
the medical district. It's distinctly smaller than their other stores (which
they acquired when they took over CUB foods and when Jewel-Osco fled back to
Chicago) and is laid out differently, with a much larger deli/hot deli section.
The local "nose in the air" arbiters of WHAT'S RIGHT lambasted the store for
not being "pedestrian friendly".

Hah! They immediately got comments like "I can walk to it, don't have to take
the bus or cadge a ride. That's friendly enough for me." And from the people
who work in medical services at one of the hospitals, doctor's offices, labs,
etc. "We can walk over there on our lunch hour and eat at the deli. And maybe
get something to take home for supper." And the market does a good business.

DD> And it's not exactly good news for me as the store that they have
DD> already moved and the one which is waiting for their new building to
DD> finished were on my usual routes. Now I will have to go further for a
DD> single stop - as there is nothing else in the area of interest to me.

NB> One can get used to the change, but one doesn't necessarily have to
 NB> like it much... ;)

The only possible benefit I can see is the chance of ALDI doing China-Mart in
the wallet. And that is not a bad thing. Sadly though, there are enough
Wal-Martians out there that it probably won't make a lot of difference.

DD> I was discussing the move with my friend, Dennis, last night and he
DD> began complaining about the quality of ALDI's canned vegetables. I find
DD> the ALDI canned veggies about on a par with Del Monte, Libby's, etc. -
DD> IOW, not all that great.

NB> I'm afraid I tend to parody the Libby's ad... when it says Libby's
NB> Libby's Libby's on the label label label, you will hate it hate it hate
NB> it on your table table table, it says Libby's Libby's Libby's on the
 NB> label label label... (G)

I find Libby's to be better than Del Monte - but, that's just damning with
faint praise. Bv)=

DD> So I said, "Listen to your silly self, we're
DD> talking canned here. Not fresh or even frozen." Then I asked him if he
DD> understood how food is factory canned ... which he didn't have a clew.
DD> I dunno how he managed to get past 70 years old without knowing that.

NB> Skill...?? (G) Age doesn't impart wisdom or understanding without
NB> some sort of learning along the way, unfortunately... and some are way
NB> too skilled at ignoring little things like that...

Well, he's a computer/communications geek.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Chocolate Salty Balls *
 Categories: Chocolate, Booze, Snacks, Desserts
      Yield: 24 servings

    2/3 c Salted butter
  1 1/2 c Sugar
    1/4 c Brandy
      4 c Semisweet chocolate chips
      2 ts Vanilla extract
      4 lg Eggs
      2 tb Cinnamon
  1 1/2 c All-purpose flour
    1/2 ts Baking soda
    1/2 ts Table salt
           Coarse sea salt

In a saucepan, bring the butter, sugar and brandy to a
boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat. Stir
(with a wooden spoon) in 2 cups of chocolate chips until
melted. Remember to give that spoon a lick!

Cool mixture slightly. Stir in vanilla. In a large mixing
bowl, beat the eggs. Gradually add the chocolate mixture
and mix well. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt,
then gradually add the dry ingredients to the chocolate
mixture. Stir in any remaining chocolate chips. Spread
into a greased baking pan. Bake at 325øF/160øC for 35-45
minutes or until a fork inserted in the center comes out
clean. Careful not to burn your balls!

Let cool just enough that it won't burn your hands.
Meanwhile set up a small plate or cutting board with some
of the sea salt on it. Scrape up the brownie mix, working
around the edges. You don't want to use the hard edges for
  the balls.

Begin shaping 1" balls out of the mix, give or take in
size. Roll the balls in the salt. Do this very lightly, a
little sea salt goes a very long way. If you do happen to
over-salt, just brush the excess salt crystals off. Too
much salt is bad, mmmkay? You're done, put 'em in your
  mouth and suck 'em!

  * From the South Park television series. The recipe comes
from one of those comedic misguided soul songs, probably
the most popular song from the show, titled "Chocolate
Salty Balls." I warn you it's totally NSFW (or for the
squeamish, or easily offended, OR children).
