That sounds plausible to me. When I was in Ireland and not
under the care of my wealthy friends, I'd say 60-75% of my
caloric intake was potatoes, and I was in more affluent
than average company. Remember that among the poor of Asia,
one could say the same about rice.

I would guess that the goodness depended on the ratio of
potato to the rest of the ingredients.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Chicken Pot Pie Baltimore
 Categories: Pies, Chicken, Potatoes
      Yield: 4 Servings

      2 cn Cream of potato soup
      2 c  Chicken - cooked & diced
    1/2 ts Thyme
     16 oz Mixed vegetables - drained
    1/2 c  Milk
    1/2 ts Black pepper
      2    9-inch pie crusts - thawed
      1    Egg - slightly beaten

  Combine first six ingredients. Spoon into prepared pie crust. Cover
  with top crust, crimp edges to seal. Slit top crust and brush with
  egg, if desired. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes.
