One wonders about uninformed and unconcerned consumers
of the health care system. Problem is that the profession
has built such a mystique about itself and its calling
that people are very reluctant to be critical, lest they
become critical, if you please.

They eventually called for a blood workup, thousands of
dollars worth, with the satisfactory result that they
admitted I was right about the bleeding and the
unsatisfactory result that they admitted they had no
idea why that was and couldn't do anything about it.
The neutral piece of information (neutral for me but
probably galling for the hematologist) was that in 50%
of the patients with abnormal bleeding, it goes down
into the record as idiopathic, i.e., nobody can figure

See the above sentence? It popped up randomly into this
message. Odd, as I am using a DOS text editor, and I've
never typed that text in my life (it's a link on my Windows
desktop. Something excessively weird and poisonous is
happening in this computer, to the degree that there are
random misspellings and other interpolations popping up,
and the cursor jumps around randomly. I've mostly been
noticing this after the replacement of the keyboard (with
the Japanese one) and the motherboard (provenance unknown). 

VEGETARIAN BROTH

Yield: 4 qt

4 lg carrots, washed and roughly chopped
4 yellow onions, peeled and roughly chopped
1 bn celery, washed and roughly chopped
3 hd fennel, roughly chopped
1 sm hand ginger, washed and sliced
1 lg sweet potato, peeled and sliced
4 stalks lemongrass, stemmed and pounded
2 apples, washed and split
2 bay leaves
2 hd garlic, split
4 sprigs thyme
1/2 lb dried whole shiitake mushrooms, rinsed
1 Tb black peppercorns, toasted
2 Tb soy sauce
Grapeseed oil for cooking

In a large stock pot coated very lightly with oil
over medium-high heat, saute the carrots, onions,
celery, fennel, ginger, sweet potato, and lemongrass
until caramelized, about 10 min. Add apples, bay
leaves, garlic, thyme, shiitakes, peppercorns, and
soy sauce.

Cover with cold water (at least 4 qt). Bring to a
simmer and cook 1 1/2 hr until the broth has reduced
by 20 percent. Taste for seasoning. Strain and store
in fridge for up to two weeks or freeze for two months.
