=============================
Hi Michael,

RH> So are you paying more attention to your health issues now?

ML> Boys and girls, can you say "yes and no"? I've figured out
ML> that a modified paleo or Atkins regime is probably best for
ML> me - whenever I went on a diet with substantial carbs, I
ML> had horrible things happen to me. A high-protein high-fat
ML> intake does wonders for my numbers, disposition, and
ML> waistline, so that's what I try to follow. It's expensive,
ML> and so there are substantial falldowns, which I usually
 ML> suffer the consequences for.

i'm trying to stay fairly low carb, pushing the vegetables and proteins
(but not a lot of meat) but not totally ignoring starches and fruits.
Watching the total carb numbers, allowing limited simple sugars, etc,
has allowed me to drop the insulin and several sizes in clothing. Had to
get some new stuff this spring that would stay up without major belting
in.

RH> Something on that order. Or, like me getting cotton candy at fairs
RH> because my parents never let us have any when we were younger.

ML> I was relatively obedient myself, surprising to relate,
ML> and I had few such prohibition-induced cravings. The one
ML> major forbidden food, oddly, was rou si (pork floss),
ML> supposedly because it was available only from Asia and
ML> not processed to the standards required over here.
ML> Eventually the opportunity came up, and I tried it, but
ML> I didn't jump up and down waiting for it, and I still
ML> don't. It is essentially an umami bomb, and if it's in
ML> front of me, I'll eat however much is available, as
ML> speedily as possible, but otherwise, eh, I'll wait for

It sounds interesting--what makes it so good?

ML> next time. Funny thing - at the recent picnic, it was
ML> available in the H Mart, two flavors, with a blue label
ML> and a red label, and I sort of mulled over which to get,
ML> and then I forgot about it altogether. Not like me to
ML> pass up the opportunity to compare two types of anything,
ML> much less one I really like, but there it was.

And we missed the opportunity to try it. Oh well, there were a lot of
other interesting things to try. Never had duck confit before so that
was a first, as well as most of the chorizos.

RH> Some form of exercise, even if it's just parking a bit further out and
RH> walking to a store entrance, is better than none.

ML> By plurality that may be true, but it's not possible to
ML> generalize. From what I've seen of the population of my
ML> aging friends, there's a whole spectrum, including the
ML> totally exercise-averse whose hearts have taken them into
ML> their 70s-80s looking and acting like midlifers. One thing
ML> I can say with confidence is that the ones who engaged in
ML> regular vigorous exercise are in worse shape than the ones
ML> who didn't - I'm not sure about their cardiovascular
ML> systems - they seem to have the same level of heart disease
ML> and stuff - but their peripheral systems are much worse.

I know someone who's been very sedentary all his life, basically a
hermit since getting out on his own, and is now paying for it with major
health issues. I was more active when I was younger than I am now but
have beaten off a couple of major health issues, actually improving my
health over the last few years.

ML> If I have any takeaway from this, it's that you should not
ML> run, probably should not hike, and above all never ski.

I gave up running after I bummed up my knee, did very little hiking and
the last time I was on skis was probably close to 25 years ago. Those
were cross country; last time I was on downhill skis was when I was in
college.

 ML> But those folks that
RH> park as close as they can, get all kinds of junk food and basically
RH> get no exercise usually develop health issues at a much younger age.

ML> There are people for which such a regimen doesn't cause
ML> problems. One can't even say, oh, if they'd taken care of
ML> themselves, they'd be in even better condition; not only
ML> is that uncalled-for speculation, but there are substantial
ML> counterexamples out there - the ones who smoke like chimneys,
ML> eat bacon at every meal, drive to the bar ten times a week,
ML> and they live to bury their clean-living siblings.

Some do, some don't. But if you never see a doctor even semi regularly,
you're not being confronted with issues that may be reversible---if you
take action to do so.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
