It's a good thing Annie gave me a camera. As long as I can
put my nose up to a laptop screen I can at least relive my
former triumphs. Not that I expect an immediate downturn in
my wanderings, but some constriction is likely to happen
sooner or later. I hope I don't live until a trip to Rock
Creek Park or Cleveland becomes the excitement of the month.

My relations have mostly been supplementary ones, which
means that at one point or another my partner in some sense
becomes a competitor for the same resources, whether it be
time or that last seat in first class.

Likely. Anyhow, there weren't any millions.

It's hard to say. He was very discreet, unlike me.

Yep - 4 (perhaps all 5 at the time, I'm not sure about the
chronology, now that I think about it, I think 5) surviving
kids plus all us grandchildren, who similarly to your
situation got fractional shares - for me just enough to pay
for travel for a year, maybe two at the most.

I thought the United Way (aka United Fund, fka United Givers'
Fund) was a great idea, divvying up general charitable donations
in an evenhanded way, and I used to give periodically, until I
discovered that appalling amounts of the apportionment was going
both above and below board into the pockets of the administrators.
Now the only such giving I do is to United Airlines, where an
appalling amount of the apportionment goes into the pockets of the
administrators, but at least I get to see the world. I will still
occasionally sneak a few bucks into the coffers of Unicef or the
Salvation Army but try to do so in a way that I can't get blamed
for doing so and penalized by having thousands of begging letters
clogging my inbox.

Bucatini Bolognese
cat: Italian, Ohio, pasta, main
servings: 4 to 6

1/4 lb pancetta, diced small
1/2 lb ground chuck or brisket
1/2 lb ground veal
1/2 lb ground pork
1 onion, diced small
2 carrots, diced small
2 ribs celery, diced small
2 garlic cloves, minced
6 sage leaves, chopped fine
1/2 c tomato paste
1 qt chicken stock
1 c heavy cream
1/2 lb butter, diced
s, p
1 lb bucatini (or other pasta)
olive oil
chopped basil

Heat a large heavy pot over high heat.

Add pancetta, lower heat to medium, and cook
3-5 min. Add the ground meats and brown. Remove
meats from pot and drain fat.

In the same pot, sweat vegetables until
translucent. Add tomato paste, stock, and
reserved meat. Cook to a sauce consistency.
Reduce heat to low and cook 2-3 hr.

Just before serving, stir in cream and butter
and cook 5 min. Correct seasoning.

Serve over pasta that has been cooked according
to package instructions and tossed with olive
oil. Garnish with basil.
