======================
Hi Nancy,

NB> RH>> tonight but supper was easy--we supported the JROTC fish fry.
NB> (G) NB>> I trust that it was tasty as well as charitable... ;)

RH> The fish was very good--flounder. Served with canned boiled potatoes
RH> and canned green beans, plus hush puppies. We both ate the beans, saved
RH> the potatoes for another meal (had with the lamb on Monday night) and
RH> still have some hush puppies in the fridge.

NB> Not too bad... :) I'd probably have used both the potatoes and the
NB> beans in some sort of stew to cover the canned-ness... But the fish
NB> and the hush puppies sound nice... :)

The pan drippings from the lamb tasted good on the potatoes and covered
over the "canned-ness". The beans, eh, we just wanted to have a
vegetable with the fish. It had been a busy enough day that having a no
fuss supper was good. We did use proper flatware, but put it in the
dishwasher for clean up.

NB> And the alternative would be not babying them at the end, just serving
NB> them as finished at home beforehand... ;)

Could have, but maybe if we do something during the winter and I have
the time to do the beans the way I want, I'll do so. I don't have any
measurements but I start with the dry, soaked & cooked beans. Then I'll
add molasses, brown sugar, ketchup, canned tomatoes, vinegar, mustard,
chopped onion and some sort of meat. Good and gone is the best
description for them. (G)

NB> your name on it NB>> in our freezer now... ;) I had to hunt to find
NB> where they (the small NB>> amount left of them) had been put, so
NB> figured that if I waited another NB>> week there might not be any at
 NB> all... ;)

RH> Sounds good, hope the mail man isn't a chocoholic. (G)

NB> I hadn't thought of mailing them... do you think they'd survive
 NB> that...?

Don't know, depends on how warm it's supposed to be. We're on a downward
trend again but even low to mid 70s is not good chocolate mailing
weather.

NB> NB>> There's also the huge bags of mixes, also only available this
NB> time of NB>> year, here. But usually we only see the full-size bars
NB> and the bags NB>> of minis throughout the year...

RH> I try to tune it out but we do get chocolate bars at Aldi's and some
RH> other things (choc covered mints, caramels, espresso beans, almonds,
RH> etc) at Trader Joe's from time to time. The days of enjoying a full
RH> size bar are gone but a fun size bar is good in that the carb count is
RH> very reasonable--well within my allowance.

NB> Mostly we get the minis, and the occasional larger dark chocolate bar
NB> for piecing out.... They tend to last a reasonably long time around
 NB> our house...

Steve said that the price of chocolate is headed up so we stocked up (a
bit) at Aldi's today. They didn't have any of the mint bars but had a
new hint of sea salt flavor so I grabbed a couple to try.

 RH> A few months ago at TJ's I
RH> picked up a small bag of dark choc covered peanut butter cup minis for
RH> Steve. Next time we were there, he had to get a bigger container. (G)

NB> Gotta be careful what one brings home on trial... that was what got
NB> Richard hooked on the Snickers PB Squared...

For those that like PB, anything brought into the house with PB in, is
fair game.

RH> There are so many other things that go well with chocolate--mint, for
 RH> example. (G)

NB> I'd agree with you... but Richard isn't keen on mint at all... tastes
 NB> differ, as always... ;)

As always. I have made chocolate chip cookies, subbing out mint extract
for the vanilla, and gotten the "something's different about these
cookies, not sure what it is, but it's good" reaction. Then I'll tell
the questioner what I did and the light downs. It's a subtle taste
difference, but makes a really good chocolate chip cookie.

Catch you later,
Ruth
