=============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> summer NB>> during my college years taking care of two VERY spoiled
NB> kids... good NB>> thing I'd had enough experience with taking care of
NB> other children NB>> first, or it might well have deterred... ;)

RH> I never had much experience with infants until I had my own--they take
RH> a lot of work! I'd done a lot of baby sitting but most of my clients
RH> were able to walk, talk, potty trained, etc.

NB> Toddlers running around take a lot of energy, too... (G) Of course,
NB> having two infants close in age magnifies how much work they take, or
NB> at least how it hits you... ;) That was one of the few benefits of
NB> having just an only child, I guess... not having more than one in
 NB> diapers at a time... ;)

Better'n Steve's mom having 3 in diapers at the same time. We were
trying to be semi self sufficient. That's partly why I was baking all
the bread, etc; canning; making almost all of my clothes as well as some
for Steve and the girls and so on. Long, busy days.

RH> (Betty Crocker kid's cook book)
NB> RH>>> I'll have to check the condition of mine. Mom used it almost
NB> RH>> At least stained from cocoa, butter, or what have you.
 NB> NB>> Yup. Exactly... :)

RH> I'll try to find it next time we go up to NY, if I remember.

NB> As long as things aren't too hectic, you'll probably remember... :)

Have to see when we go up again. If it's a "regular" visit--check on Mom
& Dad, take care of some things around the house, etc, it'll be easier
to remember to check. OTOH, if it's a "time to say 'good-bye', funeral
services" trip, not as likely I'd remember to check for a cook book.

NB> RH>> Yes, I did put a chicken and a pound of ground beef in it
NB> yesterday. RH>> Also some boneless pork chops, only a couple of
NB> meal's worth. Enough RH>> meat for a week or so.
NB> NB>> Not enough to fill the freezer, just to make sure that the meat
NB> stays NB>> good until you have a chance to use it... :)

RH> Exactly! I'll probably pull the chicken out to thaw in the next day or
RH> so; Steve can smoke it for supper.

 NB> That sounds yummy. :)

It's still in the freezer as Steve smoked a pastrami and rack of ribs.
Maybe next week I'll get it out.

NB> NB>> No wondering about how people discover your talents and
 NB> abilities... NB>> ;)

RH> Had a tea party with some of the ladies (one semi shut in, at her
RH> house) today. She told me to bring whatever I wanted, other ladies were
RH> bringing sweets. I decided to make cucumber sandwiches using a loaf of
RH> party (small, very thin sliced) sourdough bread. I toasted it on one
RH> side, flipped it and put butter blend on the untoasted side. Then I
RH> put on a dab of the dip (sort of a ranch type), a round of cucumber and
RH> topped it with a quarter (cut the long way) grape tomato. Very
RH> appropriate, and very well received by all.

NB> Not quite your typical cucumber sandwiches, but a nice variant.. :)
 NB> I picture it as open-faced... more like a hors d'oeuvre..?

They were open faced, yes. I don't recall ever having a cucumber
sandwich but had seen a recipe for one--it had some ingredients I didn't
have on hand. I thought my variant would be a good one, and it was. On
Monday I went with my friend to the tea room in town; she ordered the
afternoon tea. It came with some cookies, a scone and a couple of
sandwich quarters. One looked to have some sort of cucumber and cream
cheese filling. Maybe more traditional, maybe not but mine fit our party
quite well.

Catch you later,
Ruth
