DD>> When I was a kid - sometime around the time your daddy met your momma
 NB>> '46? :)

 DD> You're older than I thought. I had you figured for a mid-50s model. I
DD> was referring to '54 just after we moved to the big city. Bv)=

A common mistake... I often get the "but you're too young to have
been/done [whatever]"... I was the oldest of 4 kids in '54... But, as
we didn't live close to any drug stores, I didn't get to see too many of
them... not for another probably at least 5-6 years, and another two
moves...

DD>> - ALL drug stores had a soda fountain. And Walgreen's had just one
DD>> location, downtown right on the main downtown bus stop corner. They did
DD>> a killer business all open hours at that soda fountain.
NB>> They used to be so common that one didn't even think about their
NB>> existence, just expected them... along with the sandwich counters at
 NB>> the Woolworth's and Kresge's and all... :)

DD> Many of the drug store soda fountains also did a brisk business in egg
DD> salad sammiches, etc. Along with the I scream soda and milk shake
 DD> trade.

I don't think I ever had much of an opportunity to do anything but
observe their existence... until much much later... Daddy would take
some of us kids shopping with us, but things tended to be pretty focused
on what needed to be obtained, no extra frills... and we were always
sternly reminded to not touch anything in the store... :)

DD>> There is good reason that Wegmans finishes at the top of all those
DD>> surveys. I've not been in a lot of their stores - but, I have never,
DD>> ever, been disappointed with the visits I have made. A good part of it
DD>> is company attitude - which rubs off on the help.
NB>> And is also encouraged in the help. :) Anyone that might be out on
NB>> the floor for any reason is considered to be a Customer Service rep,
NB>> expected to help any customer with any problem... or know where to
 NB>> point them...
DD>> My company does a lot the same ... although they aren't as
 DD>> recognised for it.
NB>> Interestingly, that seems to be a regional thing... the AutoZones
NB>> around here aren't known for their good attitude towards the customer,
NB>> nor for the quality of their service.. The closest one to us seems to
 NB>> be ok, though...

DD> It *should* be company wide since they always hammer on customer
DD> service in the Rah-Rah meetings. I think it's even part of the company
DD> motto. I do know that there is, at least twice per Rah Rah meeting, a
DD> call and response thing that has a question "Who's number one?" And the
 DD> response is "The Customer".

Interesting. :) I remember the Rah-Rah meetings when I sold Tupperware
(not the wisest choice for me, after all...), much the same... :) But
Wegmans doesn't have anything of the sort that I'm aware of... just
makes it part of the original training, and drums it in then...
Possibly there are posters in the employee backrooms, but that's about
it... But the general attitude is pretty evident, that everyone needs
to be concerned about the customer and his/her needs... :)

DD>> I told a guy I was helping at one of the out-of-town stores on my route
DD>> "I wouldn't be doing this job if I didn't enjoy helping people." And
DD>> after those words escaped my mouth it dawned on me that I was right.
DD>> It certainly isn't for the $$$ - I could make more elsewhere.
NB>> It's good to have a job where you feel like you are doing something
 NB>> useful and enjoyable. :)

DD> That's pretty much been my work career - I've managed to do about what
DD> I wanted. I certainly could have made more money had I been more
DD> willing to kiss corporate butts, etc. But, job satisfaction is a mostly
DD> unrecognised part of the compensation package. It's the part that,
DD> while it doesn't feed the bulldog, or hang the screen door, lets you
 DD> enjoy life.

And not end up feeling bad about what you are being forced into
becoming... :)
