We were about 4 hours from Mom's family so went there for Thanksgiving,
they came up to our house for Christmas. After my grandmother had her
first stroke, we went down there for Christmas (usually a day or 2
later) too.

We'd visit grandparents (grandfathe passed away when I was 4) and
aunts/uncle several times a year.

Seems that way, looking back. Plus side was having the pickles and
olives.

I don't think my parents bought either pickles or olives the last few
years. My sister might bring some up, but I can't say for sure--we've
not been there for holidays much, even since we moved back east. anyway,
it would be the regular black olives, unless I brought some kalamatas.

My mom used the candied fruit in fruit cake. Candy was boughten, usually
a big box of assorted chocolates.

They weren't as sweet as the higher sugar ones. One was a molasses
cookie; I think the other lower carb/sugar one was pizelles. One of the
higher carb cookies was a pumpkin/mincemeat bar--she ate a lot of those.
