======================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> Indiana and Mississippi were a bit far from New York (maternal)
 NB> or NB>> even Maryland (paternal). :)

RH> Like us, most years we've not been home for holidays, especially after
RH> Steve joined the Army. Until we moved to GA, we probably were home for
RH> less than 10, total in 30+ years.

NB> Living in the same vicinity of our parents, we were spending holidays
NB> with family, either mine or Richard's (or both)... still do with my
NB> family, not any more with his, now that his mom's gone....

We've been more sporadic since moving to NC--Christmas is the one we've
spent most often elsewhere. First year we were here because we left 2
days later for Israel, 2010 we were in Margaretville, 2011 & 13 in
Florida and 2012 in Las Vegas. We've been here for all Thanksgivings
(except Steve was in Guyana 2 years ago).

NB> NB>> weather months of the year. When we were living in Mississippi,
NB> NB>> we spent summers in the DC area, and were fairly close then to
NB> my NB>> father's brother and his parents...

RH> So you got to know family then. Even tho our girls were raised with
RH> limited contact with cousins, anunts, uncles and grandparents, they
RH> now have a close relationship with just about all of them.

NB> We did get to know most of the family, aunts/uncles/grands/etc... just
NB> not usually at holidays. Even then, there were a lot to get to know..
 NB> ;)

Big families mean lots of relatives. It took us a good while after we
got married for us to meet a lot of each other's relatives.

NB> NB>> Not every one has progressed to kalamatas... ;)

RH> I suspect we're the only ones in my family. (G)

NB> Depends on if/when people get exposed to them... and how wide they let
NB> their taste range go.. :) I think there are some besides us in my
NB> family that like the kalamatas... and probably the full range of
 NB> olives... ;)

Steve gave me all the black olive slices from his salad last night when
we went over to a local Italian place. (G)

NB> it themselves, NB>> and certainly the fruit cake wasn't homemade, at
NB> least by us... ;) NB>> Daddy would sometimes buy the ribbon candy,
 NB> though... :)

RH> One year we had ribbon candy; I must have been somewhere between 6 and
RH> 8 years old then. I remember having it but there was nothing to tie it
RH> to a specific year. Mom made the fruitcake up until, IIRC, either the
RH> first year we were in HI or some time while we were in AZ. After us
RH> kids left home, she made smaller loaves to send to those of us who
RH> wouldn't be home for Christmas. Steve's mom made more of a fruit and
RH> nut, with very little cake, fruitcake; my mom's was more cake than
 RH> fruit and nuts.

 NB> I think I'd like Steve's mom's cake better than your mom's... ;) I
NB> like it with just enough cake to hold the fruits and nuts together.
 NB> :)

I'll have to dig out the recipe and post it (or have Steve do it, in
MM). I like both versions. (G)

NB> NB>> I bet those tasted pretty yummy... :) Pizzelles she might not
NB> have NB>> thought looked like a cookie... and maybe she just wasn't
NB> wanting NB>> molasses cookies... ;) And, again, probably didn't look
 NB> as festive as NB>> the pumpkin/mincemeat bar... :)

RH> She was familiar with pizzelles from my having married into Steve's
RH> family. His mom brought an assortment of cookies, including them, for
RH> our wedding reception and my mom had them other times as well. Dad
RH> does't like mincemeat so she rarely had a mincemeat pie (only a couple
RH> of times to my memory). The mincemeat in the cookies was a rare treat.

NB> That's probably most of the reason, then... :) A rare treat is
NB> awfully hard to pass up.. :)

Plus, they were good sized, probably about 2"x2" and close to an inch
thick. She got lots of sugar carbs with them.

RH> The molasses cookies were small, thin & crisp cut outs, not her usual
 RH> thicker chewier cut outs.

NB> So, probably not as appealing to her, either.. :)

No, not nearly the amount of sugar of the other cookies.

NB> having NB>> it be moveable, you'd not have to leave it behind like
 NB> Janis did her NB>> custom-made island.. :)

RH> We're trying to figure out if we can hang the pot rack or not too. I
RH> may end up hanging my pots on the wall, just to free up cabinet space.

NB> As long as you have the wall space, that can be a good option... Are
NB> the ceilings higher in the house? Or is it just a question of whether
NB> or not the ceiling can take the weight of the pot rack...?

It's a bit of a cathedral ceiling, tho I don't remember if it's over all
the kitchen or there is a lower section.

Catch you later,
Ruth
