======================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> We did get to know most of the family,
NB> aunts/uncles/grands/etc... NB>> just not usually at holidays. Even
NB> then, there were a lot to get NB>> to know.. ;)

RH> Big families mean lots of relatives. It took us a good while after we
RH> got married for us to meet a lot of each other's relatives.

NB> True.. Richard's family was small enough that I'd met most of them
NB> before we got married... my family took him a little longer to get to
NB> know, although there was a pretty good showing of them at our
NB> wedding.. Kids that marry into our family now have a lot more
NB> relatives to meet, though... ;)

The big family keeps getting bigger. Steve's dad is one of 11 children;
I think there are relatives I've yet to meet. A few, but not many of my
relatives came to our wedding, none of Steve's except one set of
grandparents.

NB> the full range NB>> of olives... ;)

RH> Steve gave me all the black olive slices from his salad last night
RH> when we went over to a local Italian place. (G)

NB> Does he like any olives...?

Green and kalamata.

NB> wouldn't be home RH>> for Christmas. Steve's mom made more of a fruit
NB> and nut, with very RH>> little cake, fruitcake; my mom's was more
 NB> cake than fruit and nuts. NB>> I think I'd like Steve's mom's cake
NB> better than your mom's... ;) NB>> I like it with just enough cake to
NB> hold the fruits and nuts
 NB> NB>> together. :)

RH> I'll have to dig out the recipe and post it (or have Steve do it, in
 RH> MM). I like both versions. (G)

NB> Now that we are past Halloween, it won't be long before the fruitcakes
NB> appear in the store... :) Just like the Halloween candy, I think
NB> they only order in just so much for the season, put it out early, and
 NB> when it's gone, that's all there was... ;)

I've seen the Claxton ones already. There's one called "Southern
Supreme" that is very much like what Steve's mom makes, made west of
here, (between here & Charlotte) that is really good. We saw it in The
Fresh Market a few years ago, after friends gave us some to try. A bit
pricy but much better than the Claxton type cakes.

NB> NB>> That's probably most of the reason, then... :) A rare treat is
NB> NB>> awfully hard to pass up.. :)

RH> Plus, they were good sized, probably about 2"x2" and close to an inch
RH> thick. She got lots of sugar carbs with them.

NB> True... but I'm still thinking that the sugar carbs wasn't the main
NB> reason she was opting for them... the mincemeat was more likely the
NB> draw... And, remember, her mind was already slipping then, though you
NB> didn't know it so much yet...

She's always gone for sweets, diabetes or not so this was a big treat in
that it had both (lots of) sugar and mincemeat. She never did do much to
keep the diabetes under control--I think that contributed a lot to her
mind slipping.

NB> RH>> The molasses cookies were small, thin & crisp cut outs, not her
NB> RH>> usual thicker chewier cut outs.
NB> NB>> So, probably not as appealing to her, either.. :)

RH> No, not nearly the amount of sugar of the other cookies.

NB> Again, it may just as likely been the chewy vs crispy, not the sugar
NB> content that was the main issue for her. Not that it really matters
 NB> any more... ;)

It doesn't matter, as you say. We thought she might appreciate having
some goodies that were sweet, but a bit better for her than what she
used to make. I guess she didn't feel our cookies were "Christmas-sy
enough"--but they worked well for us.

NB> NB>> Are the ceilings higher in the house? Or is it just a question
NB> of NB>> whether or not the ceiling can take the weight of the pot
 NB> rack...?

 RH> It's a bit of a cathedral ceiling, tho I don't remember if it's over
RH> all the kitchen or there is a lower section.

NB> That could be a reach for the pots, for sure... ;) Or the pot rack
NB> might need to have long extenders to reach the ceiling... :)

I'll have to check it out when we move in. Right now we're packing up
and most likely won't get to go into the house again until after we
sign.

Catch you later,
Ruth
