It may be that the connector for the laptop is worn, preventing contact.
It could be also that the power block's connector is worn. Close
examination with a magnifying glass should help determine which is
the culprit. Please refresh my memory as to what brand and model of
laptop you have. I had to replace a connector for a laptop not too long
ago. It involved totally disassembly of the laptop, unsoldering the bad
connector and soldering in a new one. Afterward, the power connection
was perfect again. This was for an HP. However, on some laptops, the
power connector is on a separate board which may make it a bit simpler.

As for the heat, is it near the power connector? It may be coming off of
the CPU. Get a can of Electronics Duster and blow any dust out of the
heat-sink fins. That will help it to cool more efficiently. Sometimes,
when you aim into the fins, you will see a clot of dust in the fan's
intake opening. Take something and get that out if you can.
