Referencing a recent echo discussion, Nancy had brought some
Archway products so we could determine if they were as good
as the fabled cookies from our memory waybacks: ginger snaps
were not in the style for which the brand was made famous
but were reasonably true to what we think of as ginger snaps
- crisp knobs, moderately sweet, with the assertive flavors of
ginger and black pepper. The raspberry filled oatmeal cookies were
more like, but the filling was scanty and the cookies themselves
tasted a little like cardboard. I remember more of a molasses or
brown sugar flavor in the olden cookies, plus they were usually
sprinkled with granulated sugar on top (maybe the loss was due
to caving in to fashion and a "healthier" style?).

The Shipps had brought some Indian snacks made by Kohinoor:

Panchratan - "a zesty mixture of potato sticks, rice
flakes and dryfruits" - the best of the lot, appealingly sweet
and salty with a heavy hint of spicy heat;

Nut Cracker - "delicious fried peanuts coated with spice" -
the nuts coated with a dusky mixture with a distinctly brown
flavor; Dale did not care for these, but everyone else seemed
to think they were okay. Nobody ate many of them, though.

Kaju Mixture - "a zesty blend of cashew nut mixed with husked
gram & potato sticks" - this time it was my turn to be
disappointed. It was made up of smaller bits, making it hard to
eat; the snack was very salty with a clove flavor where there
was any flavor at all. The ingredients list claims 10% cashews,
but I think that's way optimistic. Husked gram means mung beans.

Hapi brand sriracha peas are fried green sweet peas coated in a
sweet and hot red mixture that is only somewhat reminiscent of
the named flavoring: Dale did a dramatic reading of the ingredients
list, which was filled with unfamiliar or inappropriate-seeming
names. The snack value was high, though, as they went excellently
with beer, of which there was plenty at this picnic, as usual.

Lay's Spanish tomato tango potato chips, found in the Indian
store and according to the label manufactured by Pepsico and
imported from India - "Add a hint of romance and magic to
your day when you get flirty with the tangy and irresistible
taste of Lay's Spanish Tomato Tango" - these were ordinary
crinkle-cut chips dusted with a red powder that showed visual
promise but tasted like cheap off-brand ketchup. Nobody liked it
and a second bag bought in an optimistic glow went unopened.
