===========================
Hi Michael,

ML> Back then I think teachers were underinvolved in
ML> child welfare, maybe as much as they can be
ML> overinvolved now. Anyhow, as I recall, I was
RH> They were concerned with making sure the child at that age knew how to
RH> print his name, read Dick & Jane, and do basic math. No teaching to
RH> the test, administering one of countless state tests or being nanny to
 RH> the classroom.

ML> It is perhaps ironic that though educational technique has
ML> come a long way (in a good direction) the actual delivery of
ML> learning has if anything deproved over the years. Possibly
ML> a sign of greater income inequality.

Also, lots more state and federal regulations that have to be complied
with in public schools. I've got friends who teach or have taught in
both public and private schools--the kids learn so much more in the
latter because the teachers are freer to teach other than to the test.
Private school don't have teacher work days (no school for the kids)
every other week either so the kids keep more of a continuity of
learning.

ML> year. In first grade, there wasn't a sink in the
 ML> back of the room.
RH> So did you get a hall pass to wash up in the bathroom?

ML> Back then, no hall passes, no hall monitors even. And I
ML> think the school doors were unlocked. You just raised your
ML> hand and said, can I go to the bathroom, and the teacher
ML> said, MAY I go to the bathroom, and you said MAY I go to
ML> the bathroom, and the teacher said yes.

I remember passes in 4th grade, 3rd grade we had a sign out area in one
corner of the black board. But yes, schools were not locked with all the
kids inside when I was a student; the doors were only locked after hours
and off times (nights, week ends, vacations).

RH> When you have an IV or something similar in the hospital, they put in
RH> the needle, then cover it with a clear filmy thing, sticky around the
RH> edges. That's one form of a tegiderm bandage.

ML> Oh. This one was much thicker than that, not filmy at all,
ML> more like construction paper than plastic wrap, but impermeable.

They may look flimsy but they are quite tough. But, the bandage you had
sounds rather industrial strength.

ML> In many cases it's the other way round. Mental memory
ML> fails, but muscle memory comes to the rescue.
RH> I guess it could go either way, depending on what was being called on.

ML> It was that Gladwell guy who (citing other sources) pointed
ML> out that it takes 10000 hours to master a field. I'd guess
ML> that after those hours, muscular memory takes over pretty
ML> completely, but before that stage, thinking about something
 ML> might be useful.

Helps keep you on the right thought track. Got to do this before I can
do that. Got to play this section before I can play that one.

RH> Started it earlier in the afternoon, after it boiled, turned it down
RH> to a very low simmer. Maybe a bit lower than other times, maybe the
RH> longer cooking time? Don't know, but it was good.

ML> Longer cooking. Low and slow, as they say.

Works well for a lot of things.

 ML> Muerbeteig gelingt immer
 ML> 200 g Flour
 ML> 75 g Margarine or Butter
 ML> 75 g Sugar

ML> M's note: for cookies, use a bit more sugar.
RH> Not neccessarily; German cookies, patries, etc seem to be less sweet
RH> than American ones. Maybe we should have less of a sweet tooth?

ML> Of course we should have less of a sweet tooth, but
 ML> a ratio of 3 to 1 is way too skimpy - 2 to 1, more like,
 ML> maybe up to 1 to 1.

I think 2 to 1 would work well overall, don't know if I want many sweets
at a 1 to 1 ratio. That's getting a bit too sweet for me, especially if
it's a pastry or something on that sort.

ML> One can easily err in the other direction, making something
ML> that is more like candy than cookies, though:

I don't want my teeth to itch too much. (G)
