I drink Diet Coke only if the only other choice is a PepsiCo product. Although
I may give Diet Burpsie a shot again sine they have announced they are
switching out the aspertame for some other fake sugar. Want to see if that does
for the bog-nasty after taste. My preferred diet cola is Coke Zero which
actually tastes like Mexican Co-Cola (sweetened with sugar, not HFCS).

RH> That would be a fun one, or panning for Herkimer diamonds.

DD> Got enough crystals, thank you. Druther go to Arkansas and try for
DD> real diamonds. But, that's not likely any time soon.

RH> The Herkimer diamonds are more in my price range. I know there are ruby
RH> and emerald mines in the western part of NC but we've not stopped at
RH> any, yet, to try our hand. I'd go for the rubies; my birthstone.

I did that tour when I was going through my phase of interest in lapidary as a
hobby. Most of the stuff is industrial-grade rather than gem grade. Although I
did score a 2 carat ruby that polised into a nice "star" ruby cabacon - and
became a birthday pendant for a lady who was born of 04 July. Her husband paid
me enough for the pendant that my entire two-week trip to the Carolinas was
covered.

DD> I was on the Sam Adams tour .... and it was OK from a learning
DD> standpoint. But the Sam Adams home "plant" is more of a laboratory
DD> than a production brewery. After a recipe is developed at the Boston
DD> location it is contracted out for production to breweries around the
 DD> country.

RH> Probably the same way for products like Coke, pepsi and other drinks.

DD> Most soft drink companies licence their product and recipe - the
DD> breweries maintain ownership (and profits).

RH> Either one, doesn't get many of my dollars. Used to be interesting
RH> seeing where the sodas were put up but I've not really paid attention
RH> to it lately. Do they still put it on the can or bottle?

Haven't looked lately .... and all my aluminum cans are smushed down and in the
recycle bag.

DD> OTOH, I took a couple of tours of beer factories (Budweiser in St.
DD> Louis, MO and Coors in Golden,CO) - and the process was pretty much
DD> what I used to do in my kitchen and basement when I brewed my own
DD> beer. The fun part (and something I suspect that Steve might enjoy)
DD> was watching the packaging machinery for both the bottles and the cans
DD> ---- as a river of containers came together, was assembled into
DD> packages, sealed up and stacked on pallets and ready to ship. All with
 DD> minimal visible human intervention.

RH> A techno-geek's love of machinery in motion--he'd really enjoy that.

DD> There's a bit of Rube Goldberg in all of us.

RH> Most of us, not all of us. I know some folks who wouldn't care for the
 RH> ingenuity of them.

They are probably the same people who would gripe at being hung with a new
ope.

      Title: Ruby-Red Grapefruit Sorbet
Categories: Desserts, I scream, Citrus, Wine
      Yield: 11 Servings

      1 c Sugar
      1 c Water
           Salt
1 tb Grated red grapefruit rind
3 c Fresh red grapefruit juice
      1 c Semi-sweet sparkling wine *

  * I have used Trader Joe's Cranberry Sparkling soda
as a substitute since it was on hand for a kid's holiday
  party anyway.

Combine first 3 ingredients in a saucepan; stir well.
Bring to a boil; cook 1 minute or until sugar dissolves,
stirring constantly. Remove from heat; pour into a large
bowl, and stir in grapefruit rind. Let cool to room
  temperature.

Add grapefruit juice and sparkling wine to sugar mixture.
  Pour mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer;
  freeze according to manufacturer's directions.

Spoon into a freezer-safe container; cover and freeze 2
  hours.

Yield: 11 servings (serving size: 1/2 cup).
