=================================
Hi Dave,

RH> That would have been fun; Food Network must have had a decent sized

DD> Back in the day it was a *much* different network than it is today. It
DD> was really about cooking and teaching people how to cook and to eat -

RH> So when/why did it change?

DD> You've seen me say this before - and not being cynical - the answer to
DD> the why is, as always, money. The bean counter department trumped the
 DD> quality
DD> department as it seems to do with increasing frequency in this world.

Trying for a new and improved didn't work out. Gave us shows with hosts
like Racheal Ray, Sandra Lee, Guy Fieri, etc. Alton Brown was more
entertaiing than any 2 of the above plus you knew the science behind the
cooking.

DD> unlike the cheaply produced crap that is there today - the thinly
DD> disguised reality shows masquerading as cooking shows, the game show
DD> format stuff like Iron Chef, etc.

RH> Iron Chef was originally a Japanese show. We saw it in HI, in Japanese.
RH> I forget if they used sub titles, dubbed into English or how/if they
RH> translated it but it was fun to watch.

DD> The original shown on TVFN was the Japanese version featuring (I
DD> think) some guys named Morimoto, Nakamura and Sakai. When Scripps bean
DD> counters figured out they could do the show on-shore and even import
DD> Morimoto to be an Iron Chef without sending royalties to Japan they
 DD> did so.

He now lives on Oahu, IIRC; more of an entertainer than serious chef.

DD> We have our own Iron Chef right here. He is the current moderator and
DD> has been known, at picnics (probably elsewhere, too), to be presented
DD> with surprise ingredients and expected to some up with something
DD> tasty. Personally, I druther eat Michael's output than some of the
DD> stuff I saw win the day on Iron Chef.

Some of it is rather far fetched; I'll agree to that. OTOH, I've seen
some dishes that looked pretty good & I wouldn't mind sampling.

DD> trattorias and cooking at the drop of one of his red clogs.

RH> I thought they were orange clogs, looked that way to me anyway. Maybe
RH> they faded by the time I started watching. (G)

DD> Or he may have changed colours. I have a vivid memory of him wearing
DD> red clogs to match his red scooter. The camera zoomed in on them
DD> several times. A search via Der Bingle shows a line of Mario Batali
DD> clogs with orange prominently featured. Of course my memory may be as
DD> suspect as my gall bladder ... it has been nearly 20 years since that
 DD> Italian trip show aired.

RH> Are there any Youtube video clips possibly available? We saw that for
RH> the first time in HI also; I recall one segment showing how to skin a
 RH> (cooked) potato.

DD> I seldom do U-Toob or any on-line video at all. So, I haven't looked.
DD> But, given the ubiquity of people re-posting copyrighted material
DD> (with or without let from the copyright holder(s)) it's probably there
 DD> somewhere.

I'll watch something over Steve's shoulder from time to time but don't
fire it up myself. Most of it is dreck but we did see a couple of pieces
by the Piano Guys; we're going to see them live in November at DPAC.
Wonder if the same food truck will be parked out front again.

 DD> >>TRIM<<
DD> the original host of Price is High and Hugh Downs was on
 DD> Concentration.

RH> I remember watching Concentration at my grandmother's house when I was
RH> a kid. Saw the new version years later and wasn't that impressed with
RH> it. Remember Alan Ludden and Password, Gary Moore and I've Got a
RH> Secret? (I think he was a replacement.) I've forgotten who was the host
RH> of To Tell the Truth, another oldie.

DD> TTTT was originally hosted by Bud Collyer, followed by Gary Moore and
DD> then by Joe Garagiloa. Secret was originally hosted by Gary Moore and
DD> he was replaced by Steve Allen. Then there was the "(Insert Amount)
DD> Pyramid" hosted by Dick Clark who should have stuck to American
DD> Bandstand. There were a lot of those mindless babble panel shows on
DD> the glass teat back in the 50s and 60s, indeed up until I pretty much
DD> quit watching TeeVee several years ago.

I didn't get to see a lot of them but now the only one I watch with any
semblence of regularness is Jeopardy. It's about the only one that you
really need to have a fair amount of real knowledge for.

DD> Title: Aztec Pyramid Avocado Dip
DD> Categories: Dips, Fruits, Cheese, Vegetables, Dairy
 DD> Yield: 8 servings

I've seen (and eaten) layered bean dips before; I think this is the
first time I've seen something like this.

Catch you later,
