RH> Presumably a couple of good signs.

DD> Now that it has come up I'll have to ask "Rona" Binney -- a guy who

RH> Probably get a lot more information than you would care to know. (G)

Oh, he'll follow you out to the parking lot if he's not done dishing his dirt.

RH> Think they would appreciate Aldi's then? My parents shopped at one in

DD> As long as they could get along with Germans. Bv)=

RH> Both of my folks are of direct German ancestry; they had no problem
RH> with Aldi's being a German company. OTOH, my dad wasn't too thrilled

DD> That was sort of a mistake - the Eclipse was built in the
DD> Bloomington-Normal (IL) plant for its entire model run. A couple of my
DD> friends worked there and were laid off from their cushy union gigs
DD> when they discontinued that model in favour of the Endeavour SUV.

RH> Dad just saw the Mitsubishi name, didn't care what kind of car it was
RH> but that it had the Japanese name.

DD> Lot of that knee-jerk reaction stuff going around. What was the brand
 DD> of his television? Bv)=

RH> Don't recall the tv but the last couple of cars he had were a Jetta and
 RH> Passat.

That's sort of ironic. When I was selling cameras at K-Mart I had a lady ask
for a recommendation for a nice (film) camera. When I showed her both a Canon
and a Pentax she declaimed "I don't want any of those Jap cameras. My husband
and son both fought in World War Two. Don't you have any nice German cameras?"

 DD> I got into a "discussion" with a clown driving a Dodge mini-van
DD> festooned with American flags and plastered with "BUY AMERICAN"
DD> stickers. He pulled in next to me in a parking lot as I was getting
DD> out of my Mercedes and asked why I didn't drive an American car. I
DD> replied "Why don't you?" When he began to huff and puff - I pointed
DD> out that the Chrysler vans (including Dodge) are built in Canada
DD> (Windsor ON). So he zips back with "At least it's an American
DD> company." So I asked what model year is your Grand Caravan? 2001 was
DD> the reply. So I came back with "Can you say Daimler-Chrysler.? Same
DD> company built your van in Canada and my sedan in Germany".

 RH> How international we've become.

True dat. I just don't want China to become the 800 lb gorilla.

DD> BTW - Mitsubishi built pretty good aeroplanes (and continue to do so)
DD> -- politics and warlords notwithstanding.

 RH> They recovered quite well.

DD> The Japanese economy recovered by using the book on American business
DD> and following its rules closely - something than many American
 DD> businesses fail to do.

 RH> Sad to say, yes.

      Title: Japanese-style Potato Salad
 Categories: Salads, Potatoes, Sauces, Fruits
      Yield: 4 Servings

      1 lb Russet potatoes
    1/2 md Cucumber
    1/2 sm Onion; thin sliced
1 ts Yellow or dijon mustard
      3 lg Sandwich slices of ham;
           - diced in small squares
    1/2 c Mayonnaise
           Salt and pepper
           Sliced apples

Boil unpeeled potatoes. Cut cucumber lengthwise and
remove seeds and cut into thin slices and place in
bowl. Add salt. Cut onion in thin slices and soak in
cold water until you're ready to use them. Remove skins
from cooked potatoes and cut potatoes lengthwise into
pieces 1 inch wide. Drain cucumber and drain onions
well. Place all ingredients into large bowl and mix
  well.

Adding apple slices will surprise your taste buds. This
potato salad tastes very similar to the one you would
  buy in Japan.
