Frustrating day. I got way too little rest, because of the
coughing, but was too confused to actually do anything.
When people went to the Native Heritage Museum, I thought
about tagging along, but I wouldn't have been enjoyable
company and probably would have been uneasy the whole time.
I guess that what normal people do in such circumstances is
watch TV. Instead, I laundered every bit of laundry in sight,
hoping that would get me tired enough to get through the
coughing and down into sleepland, but fat chance on that.

The good thing was that the carbonnades actually tasted
kind of good, only a little, eh, extra smoky. And there was
Lilli's strip steak to deal with. It was thick enough so I
could get a nice crust outside and cooked it just rare inside,
taking as toll some of the outside fat, so I guess I'm getting
a little better.

Then a little meltdown, as Lilli initially couldn't get
everything into her two carryons and was faced with the horror
of checking a bag (this got resolved by judicious juggling and
repacking), and then to the airport.

Despite getting the three beeps of PreCheck, Lilli was pulled
aside for some small violation, and though I let a couple
people through (regular folks, pleading soon-departing flights)
I ended up ahead of her by a couple steps.

My United status still gets me and a guest into the Boardroom,
where the Alaskan Amber is free, so that's where we are now
waiting for our plane, Lilli with a glass of wine, me nursing
a cup of hot water, owing to my distressed condition. Free beer
and I don't want it? I'm not so much better as all that.

Tomorrow I get to infect my friend Fisher and his new
granddaughter (I actually warned him not to let me near her).

Alaskan Amber Moose Stew
cat: beer, main
servings: 10

1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 1/2 lb moose meat (1 inch chunks)
1 1/2 lb onion, sliced
1 Tb unsalted butter
2 ts sugar
2 Tb flour
1 1/2 ts thyme
3 carrots, sliced
12 oz Alaskan Amber Ale
1 c beef broth
1 Tb tomato paste
Salt and pepper
 
Warm oil over high heat until hot, but not smoking.
Brown meat in batches on all sides. Transfer to a plate.

Add onion and butter to pan. Cook till soft, about 5 min.
Reduce heat to medium and sprinkle in sugar. Cook until
golden, about 15 min, stirring occasionally.

Add flour, thyme, carrots and cook 1 min on high, stirring.
Pour in beer and bring to a vigorous boil. Stir in broth
and tomato paste and return to boil.

Return meat and juices to pot and bring to just a boil
and reduce heat to low, cover, simmer until meat is tender
and sauce is slightly thickened, about 1 1/2 hr. Season
with salt and pepper.
