=============================
Hi Nancy,

 NB> (Burger Bar)
 NB> NB>>> I'll have a better idea what to
NB> NB>>> expect though, after (if) I go and check them out.. :)
NB> RH>> I think you will be going sooner or later, then letting us know
NB> what RH>> damages we can expect to our wallets and waistlines. (G)
 NB> NB>> Probably, eventually... :)

RH> Sounds like us, we can talk about something for quite a while before
RH> we end up doing it.

NB> Sometimes one just has to find the right time to do something,
NB> sometimes that happens quickly, but usually it takes a while... ;) We
 NB> might be
NB> doing lunch next week sometime... that might be an option on the
NB> table, as long as I think of it when we are trying to figure out where
NB> we want to go... :)

It'll come, when it's supposed to. I've checked out the place we want to
go to for our anniversary; it is open on Sundays so we'll go on the day
itself.

NB> RH>> Menu is sloppy joes with rolls, broccoli salad, corn chips and
NB> RH>> Hartley's potato chips, dessert is TBD.
NB> NB>> Did you have non-gluten rolls available...? Or did the
NB> non-gluten NB>> folk just have it without rolls...?

RH> The non gluten eater had hers on corn chips, her suggestion so we
RH> wouldn't have to get anything special. I'd planned to bring the corn
RH> chips so she was safe there. Her non dairy eating son had no trouble
RH> with a bite of apple crisp--doubled the topping so a 10x15 pan had a
RH> stick of butter scattered in it. Mom said that he's having more
RH> trouble with dairy now but would have had an immediate reaction if the
RH> butter were an issue, and it wasn't, phew!

NB> Sounds like you did well there, then... :)

Pretty much so, knowing what the problems are and how to work around
them is half the battle. Being "into" other than the standard American
diet helps as well; we're comfortable working with alternatives.

NB> RH>> Later--dessert will be apple crisp. If you were to be here, it
 NB> would RH>> be something else. (G)
NB> NB>> Or at least you would have had an alternative available.. :)

RH> Yes, it was a good one for the first cool day since some time in May.
RH> I used almond meal instead of flour in the apple mix so it didn't
RH> thicken like it usually does, but it was gluten free.

NB> I guess you'd need some other sort of thickener, then... I guess
NB> cornstarch is out because of Steve, but would rice starch work
NB> instead...? Or maybe tapioca "flour"...?

I'll have to check what alternatives we have on hand. Cornstarch doesn't
seem to bother Steve in the amounts I use it but maybe if I use half it,
half something else, it'll cut the risk even more.

NB> NB>> apple... (G) There was some apparently very nice home-made
NB> applesauce, NB>> very thick... but I didn't have any, just got to see
NB> others enjoy NB>> it... ;) I made sure that there was a
 NB> non-apple-containing juice NB>> alternative... :)

RH> Sigh! Steve commented that we take the time to make safe foods, too
RH> bad others can't reciprocate with his corn problem. Sounds like you
RH> have some what of the same, but with apples.

NB> I'd guess that people that have food issues are more likely to think
NB> of doing alternatives, at least for themselves, and then, perhaps,
 NB> more
NB> generally for others with other issues... And some people think that
NB> it just isn't their problem, so they don't make any accommodations for

It's probably a combination of those 2 factors--those that have problems
are more attuned to other people's problems and those that don't have
the problems aren't as aware of the need for accomodating the problems
others may have.

NB> others... My sister brought a fruit salad with lots of yummy fruits,
NB> but including apples... I just picked around the apples, and got some
NB> of the ones I could have... fortunately the allergy isn't SO bad that
 NB> if a
NB> little bit of apple brushed up against the other fruits it would
NB> trigger for me... But, like Steve with corn, I don't really know what
NB> the actual threshold is for where it triggers, so I don't take a lot
 NB> of chances
 NB> beyond that...

Yes, and you were smart to play it safe with the cider vinegar at the
picnic. I had the bottle because we used some in VT, and I knew I was
going to do the chicken marinade at BP. I didn't think that I should
have had Steve buy a bottle of wine vinegar or something like that to
use instead, when he and Michael went into Canton. Then too, we don't
know what kind of vinegar Brooks uses but I've always used cider for the
knock off, partly because that's what my mom always used. I suspect
Brooks does as well; it's not that expensive. Hmmm, wonder how it would
taste done with wine vinegar.......................
