The maple operation was a by-blow to the farming operation(s). I think the
location of the main line od the Chicago & Alton Railroad (later GM&O, ICG
currently Union Pacific) was influenced by the Funk operations in grain,
cattle, etc. and the potential freight revenue. I'd say that the Funk family
and their operations were *THE* major growth factor in the area.   Bv)=

According to the McClean County Historical Society: "The Funk family arrived in
McLean County from Ohio in 1824. The family set up a homestead and farm about
10 miles southwest of Bloomington and named the area Funk's Grove. Over the
years Isaac Funk acquired 22,000 acres of farmland and upon his death his sons
and daughters inherited the land. Eugene Duncan (E.D.), a grandson of Isaac,
formed the Funk Bros. Seed Company, Inc. in 1901 with about 12 other Funk
family members. The Funk Bros. Seed Company, Inc. sought to produce higher
yield corn varieties and a way to prevent diseases from attacking corn crops.

E.D. Funk was the president of the company for many years and was active in the
political arena by becoming the president of the National Corn Association, a
member of the Agricultural Advisory Committee of the Food Administration, and
treasurer of the State Live Stock Association of Illinois. He was also selected
by President Woodrow Wilson to help keep wheat prices steady. Around 1915, Funk
Bros. developed a hybrid corn, Funk's Tribred. In the late 1930s the company
also developed another hybrid variety, the Funk's G-Series Hybrid."

In the recipe below I'd lose the beer in favour of a can of chicken broth. And
I'd substitute *all* of the beans with either Bush's Chilli Beans (pintos) or
Brook's Chilli Hot Beans - both unrinsed, just as they come from the can.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Papa Funk's Campfire Chilli
 Categories: Beef, Pork, Vegetables, Chilies, Beer
      Yield: 12 servings

      3 lb Ground chuck
      1 lb Bulk Italian sausage
     58 oz (2 cans) tomato sauce
     40 oz Can dark red kidney beans;
           - drained, rinsed
      4    Roma tomatoes; chopped
      4    Ribs celery; chopped
      2 lg Bell peppers; chopped
 15 1/2 oz Can light red kidney beans;
           - drained, mashed
 15 1/2 oz Can white kidney beans;
           - drained, rinsed
     12 oz Lager-style beer
      1 lg Sweet onion; chopped
      1 lg Red bell pepper; chopped
     12 oz (2 cans) tomato paste
      8 oz Can chopped green chilies
    1/4 c  Chilli spice mix; to taste
      4    Chipotles in adobo; chopped
      3 tb Adobo sauce from chipotles
      3 tb Ground cumin
      2 tb Tomato based barbeque sauce

  Break ground beef and sausage into small pieces and put
  into the crock of a large slow cooker; add tomato sauce,
  dark red kidney beans, roma tomatoes, celery, green bell
  pepper, light red kidney beans, white kidney beans, beer,
  sweet onion, red bell pepper, tomato paste, green chile
  peppers, chilli spice, chipotle peppers, adobo sauce,
  cumin, and barbeque sauce.

  Cook on Low for 8 hours.
