Obviously, that second 513 to 515 should have been 523 to 525.
And 522 went off altogether? Whatever. Here's 522, a set of
mediocre tastes from my trip to a household I thought 
vegetarian-oriented but that has been somewhat improved by a
family of Tanzanian immigrants who apparently eat nothing but
meat (well, virtually).

Alpine spiced apple cider (an instant product) - this was not 
really in the house but at the airport. It's from a relatively 
local (Seattle) company, but that's about the best thing one 
can say about it. The taste is very Jolly Rancher but a bit
diluted - the instructions say to add 6 to 8 oz of hot water, 
but with 6 oz the flavor is quite weak; 4.5 or 5 seems 
optimal. The powder before constitution has a mild cinnamon
aroma that disappears.

Ingredients: sugar, malic acid, maltodextrin, tricalcium 
phosphate, apple juice solids, caramel color, sodium citrate,
ascorbic acid, natural and artificial flavors, spice extractive.
[Spice extractive???]

Endangered Species 72% dark chocolate with cacao nibs - okay,
nothing special. The nibs are just an annoyance, little tough
bits that could be wood chips for all I could tell. The
chocolate itself was of decent but not spectacular flavor,
comparing not favorably with any respectable brand. The
company that makes this is from Indianapolis, home of many
endangered species no doubt.

Trader Joe's frozen falafel - aroma of slightly stale oil,
even these were cooked an hour after they were bought. A
hard but not crunchy exterior, crumbly inside that tasted
more like soybeans than chickpeas. Much improved by

Trader Joe's sesame tahini, which had a respetable sesame
flavor, decent texture, and a bit much lemon for my taste.
I should have beaten it up with a bit of olive oil but
didn't think to do so.

Two Moms in the Raw cranberry chia crunch - this is a sugar-free,
gluten-free, raw, all-natural, vegan, organic snack that manages
to embody everything people hate about all-natural vegan organic
things. It's not really crisp of course, as not enough water has
been driven out. It's slightly sour and self-sacrificial-tasting,
rather green and not my cup of tea at all. The seeds stick in my
teeth. I am not sure that the people could do much better given
their constraints, but my dollars certainly can.

Food Should Taste Good salt-pepper sweet potato chips - not too
bad; I've had mixed luck with FSTG products. These were a little
saltier than the normal sweet potato chips but had almost no
pepper; in fact the dominant flavor is onions, with garlic as a
back note. They were not so crispy (from a new bag) than they
should have been. Very expensive.

Mixed fruit Newtons made with 100% whole wheat - do not buy.
The fruit (blueberry, strawberry, raspberry flavors) tasted
okay, despite the apple base (with a few berry seeds to lend
an air of authenticity). The pastry was nasty - bitter and
stale in the way that so many second-rate whole-grain products
are. This from a new package.
