Taking it to the old reductio, I envision a hut
that has a thousand sacks of grain within sight
of a thousand huts that have one sack of grain
each. Trouble and strife.

So to speak. I think in this case grad school is
a stand-in for any old kind of driven hyper-
achievement-oriented behavior.

The next time the guy asked me in the same way, I 
said yes just to balance things out.

I suppose. But then the asking person is likely to
sense that willing to actually means reluctant to.

The question of provenance is treated most
cavalierly these days, not just on the Internet.
I make a certain effort to give an appropriate 
amount of credit or attribution if that is
readily findable; otherwise "Source unknown"
appears on a sizable proportion of what I post.

Cuban black beans and rice
category: main, Caribbean, United Airlines
servings: 4

15 oz cn black beans, drained, rinsed
1 lime, halved
salt
1 Tb olive oil
1 yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 c brown rice (M says white rice)
4 c chicken broth (sub water)
2 bay leaves
1/2 ts turmeric or cumin (M says both)
1 pn cayenne (M says 1 ts)
1/2 red onion, sliced thin
5 sprigs cilantro (M says omit)

Put beans in a pot; squeeze juice of 1/2 lime over. Stir in
2 pn salt. Set aside.

In medium pot, Warm oil over medium-high heat. Wilt yellow 
onion and garlic with 1 pn salt for 3 min or until soft.
Stir in rice and saute 30 sec, stirring constantly, until
rice is lightly toasted. Add the liquid, bay leaves, and 
spices. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, and cover
pot. Cook until liquid is absorbed, about 35 min (for white
rice, maybe 20 min).

Put the bean pot on the stove and bring to a simmer.

Divide tne rice among 4 serving bowls, then top with the
beans. Pluck the leaves from the cilantro sprigs and strew
over (M says use a sprinkle of additional cumin instead).
Garnish with red onion and sprinkle juice of the remaining
lime half over each bowl.
