That is the intended purpose. Of course circumstances often give unintended 
results. The rock walls serve much the same purpose - although with a greater 
potential for sheet metal damage due to their more erose surface.

Well, I never did care that much for Evan Williams before that trip. Still, it 
would have been as exciting had I been hauling floor-dry (kitty litter) or 
Chilli Man Chilli.

Steve Haffly avows that it was a complete assembly and that he could see the 
metal of the wheel inside the tyre. As he was there and I wasn't ..........

Sorta, kinda depend on how/why they departed the vehicle and if the tyres were 
inflated or if on of them was flat. Differences in inflation pressure can 
cause a directional bias. But, yeah, the gyroscopic effect would tend to keep 
it in a straight line - as it would a single wheel. The single wheel would be 
more prone to wobble or swerve as it lost momentum and the gyro effect 
lessened.

In my case it was caused by a failed bearing that sawed the spindle in half. 
As to the loose nuts - the best defence against such is the use of a torque 
wrench and torquing the nuts/bolts to the correct recommended foot pounds. 
But, few people do that. Some will use the lug wrench and tighten until it 
squeaks - then add a quarter or half turn. Which over-tightening can cause the 
wheel stud(s) to break, or threads to strip or equally (potentially) 
disastrous events.

      Title: Bacon-And-Egg Muffins
 Categories: Pork, Breads, Eggs
      Yield: 12 servings
 
      4 sl Bacon; in thirds
      5 lg Eggs
           Salt & ground black pepper
      1 c  All-purpose flour
    1/2 c  Yellow cornmeal
      2 tb Sugar
  2 1/2 ts Baking powder
    1/2 ts Salt
      1 c  Milk
    1/4 c  Butter; melted
    1/2 c  Shredded cheddar cheese
           Maple or cane syrup; (opt)
 
  Preheat oven to 400oF/205oC.
  
  In a large skillet cook bacon just until it begins to
  crisp. Drain and reserve dripping.
  
  Return 2 tsp. dripping to skillet.
  
  For scrambled eggs, in a small bowl beat 3 of the eggs, 2
  Tbsp. water, and a dash each of salt and pepper. Cook eggs
  in hot skillet over medium heat without stirring until
  eggs begin to set on bottom and around edges. With a large
  spatula, lift and fold for uncooked portion to flow under.
  Cook until set yet still moist. Transfer to bowl; set aside.
  
  Brush twelve 2 1/2" muffin cups with some of the remaining
  bacon dripping. Set muffin cups aside.
  
  In a medium bowl stir together flour, cornmeal, sugar,
  baking powder, and 1/2 tsp. salt. In a separate bowl
  combine milk, oil, and remaining 2 eggs; stir into flour
  mixture. Fold in scrambled eggs and cheese. Spoon into
  muffin cups (cups will be full).
  
  Place one bacon piece on each muffin. Bake 15 to 17
  minutes, until light brown and a toothpick inserted in
  center comes out clean. Cool in cups on a wire rack for 5
  minutes. To loosen muffins from pan, run a small metal
  spatula or table knife around edges of muffins; remove
  from pans. Serve warm with maple syrup.
