That too would be frightening. I presume there was no way
for the driver to keep the aft half in control, so it
went its own way for a while?

  Well, we survived VD. I had a less than delightful day, though.
  Started last week when the Parsley Lady looked a me with big, moist
  eyes (she has eyes like a Cocker Spaniel). "We don't have anyone to
  do salad prep on Valentine's Day." Gave me a long, SAAAAADDDDD story
  about how neither of the trainees was exactly making it, there wasn't
  anyone in the kitchen who could POSSIBLY get salad up for lunch...you
  know the drill. Okay, no problem. I'll do it, already, just stop
  weeping in my Coke.

  Then the next sad news, we also don't have anyone who can work the
  close either. Gee, 8 ayem to Ghod knows when... I'm gonna love this.
  Softened it by saying the GM had cleared me for overtime, though, so
  it shouldn't be a problem. She also promised to bring one of the
  trainees in at 10:30 ayem to help me finish salad so I could get a
  couple of hours break between shifts.

  VD dawns. Showed up a little early. Parsley Lady was opening manager.
  Produce truck was waiting to unload the Produce Order From Hell.
  Produce guy sees me, turns several shades of pale. He remembers me
  from the catering company (when I rejected about half of what he
  tried to deliver on the grounds that it was more suitable for
  compost). Parsley Lady tosses me the keys, asks me to check in
  produce.

  Produce guy is in the truck, rearranging his order to give the
  garbage to some other unsuspecting soul. We spend a bit of time
  checking the potato cases for eyes, the lettuce for slime, other
  niceties. He departs, looking distinctly unhappy.

  Start prepping salad. Parsley Lady is stuck prepping the prime rib
  for the day (since the prep cooks have protested that they don't have
  time to fuss with the stuff, it was decided that the opening manager
  could get the roasts in the oven. This is NOT a good idea. In the
  case of the PL, it is a suicidal idea :-) After watching her fight
  with the Cryovac for about 10 minutes, I finally wander over, get the
  roasts seasoned for her.

  "Cap side up, or rib side up?" I tell her. "Which side is the cap
  side." I tell her. "Big side forward or small side forward." I tell
  her. Somehow, she finally gets the roasts in the oven. I go back to
  salad.

  10 a.m. Junior shows up. He's supposed to open the hot line. Mutters
  rude things about the PL being allowed anywhere NEAR uncooked food.
  Or food in general, for that matter.

  10:30 a.m. Alley coordinator, who is supposed to set up/open the
  server's alley is NOT in evidence. PL tries to call. No answer. Waits
  about 15 minutes for him to arrive. No joy. Finally kidnaps the Aggie
  we have splitting shrimp to set up the line. Junior and I wind up
  helping.

  10:45 a.m. MY help arrives. She immediately gets kidnapped to
  split/peel shrimp. Why does this not surprise me?

  11 a.m. -- we open. Still no Alley Coordinator. The Aggie who was
  supposed to be splitting shrimp has to leave for class. MY help is
  now splitting shrimp. Okay. I'll live.

  Junior is looking around for HIS help. Not in evidence.

  11:30 we start to get REALLY busy. Still no help for the hot line.
  Call the Parsley Lady. "Who's supposed to be here?" Check the
  schedules. NOBODY is scheduled (PL, who does schedules is trying to
  melt into the floor tiles at this point).

  PL checks with me. "Are you up for lunch?" I am. Check with broil and
  breading. They aren't. PL dons apron and hairnet and goes to the line.
  Could call me up, but if she does, it's gonna cost BIG bucks later in
  the week, so, I stay in back, doing my salad thing.

  Noon. GM arrives. Checks out the situation. Is NOT a happy camper.
  Kicks PL off the line, goes up there himself. Also calls one of the
  breaders and one of the broil prep cooks up. I float over to the
  bread/baked potato oven to make bread for the duration (the
  dishguy/bread baker is NOT keeping up.)

  2 p.m. The lunch rush dies. Everyone goes back to work.

  3:30 p.m. I finish as much of salad as I feel is necessary, announce
  I'm taking a break (I'm scheduled back at 4 p.m. -- but have enough
  done that I should be able to grab an hour or so).

  Crashed for an hour. Prep cooks are STILL there. Finally got them outa
  there at 5. Spent the rest of the night running my &*)(&* off, as we
  went on standing line at 6 (minimum 90 minute wait). Started going
  down major food at 9 --almost everything out of the kitchen after
  that was prepped to order. Stayed on line way ALL night, until we
  locked the doors at 10 (with a line in the lobby.) Pushed the last
  check at 11:15. Nobody got outa there before midnight. The managers
  (served 'em right :-) didn't leave until 3 ayem. Fastest, sloppiest
  close I've ever done in my life. Hit the house by 12:30, sucked down
  a beer, and DIED.

  Thursday night -- I now have more than 30 hours, with 2 8-hour shifts
  (minimum) to go. If nobody hears from me for a couple of days, you'll
