So I've had this cough since about July 23, and it's sometimes
been pretty severe. My doc is in Boston and doesn't seem to
mind my going elsewhere for care when I'm elsewhere, so I've
fallen in with a bad crowd, anyway, people who rely on narcotics
not for mind-bending purposes but for actual medical reasons,
where I have been resistant to most harmful drugs all along.

But my woes have become such that I have been offered, and tried,
a variety of drugs that are often prescribed for both pain and
cough, as follows, from July to September, in this order, with
these results:

Codeine sulfate, in the smallest dose. Nothing happened.

Codeine sulfate, large dose. Nothing happened, except I got woozy.

Hydromorphone, in the smallest standard dose. I got woozy and felt
like I was going to throw up (but couldn't). The cough sort of
went away, though.

Hydrocodone, in the standard dose. I felt really sick and again
couldn't puke. I was given 2 of these and refused to take the
second one. Good for cough.

Promethazine and codeine cough syrup, smaller than standard dose.
This is called Purple Drank on the street and goes for a whole
lot of money. Apparently, you cut it with Mountain Dew, and
the combo of antidepressant/antihistamine, narcotic, and
caffeine gives you a substantial buzz. I'm afraid of this. Annie
got tired of listening to me cough and put Billy's leftover bottle
in my bathroom. Around 5 am one day I couldn't stand it any more
and took 2/3 of a teaspoon. I spun my wheels for an hour and then
conked out; next I knew it was 12:40 next afternoon. I went down
and did some stuff and went back to bed at 3. Was roused at 5 pm.
Made a lobster dinner for Annie and Robbie and then went back to
bed at 9; Didn't wake up until 7 am this morning. All from one
child's-size dose. During all of this time, including now, I have
felt lightheaded and uncomfortable. The coughing frequency has
gone down from 50/hr to 5/hr, though. I looked up promethazine
in the book, and my reaction was holy shit, they put this stuff
in cough medicine? Well, it seems to work, certainly better than
codeine by itself. To prevent the kitchen staff and diners from
being frightened off, I will probably take a supplemental 2/3
teaspoon or so tomorrow night (Wed.) for my Friday cooking gig.

I'm not likely to get addicted, but if people are fond of
disassociation and don't mind the lightheaded and uncomfortable
state, I can see how they can get addicted.

Chambord

Shake first three on ice. Serve in martini glass.
