Both of my parents were hand washers. This in itself is not
such a bad habit to cultivate, except when you do it a gazillion
times a day. I think a lot of docs and their patients would be
better off if they remembered that "you eat a peck o' dirt in
your lifetime," obvious to anyone who has ever prepared a potato.

Yep. But I admit that when doing my Lasix journey of the johnnies
it was pleasing and reassuring that the one in the subway station
smelled like bleach and was obviously swabbed down with it with
great frequency. Reminding me that being extreme works, but only
if you kill every single buggie and leave nary a one with its
resistant ability; I don't think that's practically possible but
is more likely with bleach or some extremely high- or low-pH
corrosive nasty chemical (back in my day, hydrochloric acid used to
be used on occasion as a toilet cleaner) than with any antibiotic,
especially in the dosages you get over the counter.

That's the thing. Antibiotics are so common that the critters
are used to them, and what do you do when someone catches one
of those guys, they call them superbugs, and the more time I
spend in hospitals the scareder I get of them.

Ah, <shift>-4. I do it all the time, confuses heck out of
people. Maybe that's why she did it.

Sherrie's Potato Salad
categories: starch, crowd, heirloom
yield: 
5 lb potatoes (white or red)
1 sweet onion
1 md jar dill pickles
6 eggs
3 Tb mayonnaise (more to taste)
2 Tb mustard (more to taste)

Peel and cut potatoes into small cubes. Cook until tender;
drain water then put potatoes in a bowl and refrigerate until
hard. Boil eggs; peel and cut into pieces. Cut onion and
pickles into pieces. When potatoes are cold then add eggs,
onions, and pickles. Add mayonnaise, mustard, salt and pepper
to taste. Stir all the ingredients until mixed up good together
(add more mayonnaise and mustard if needed). Refrigerate until
ready to serve. M's note: it looks to me as though to get a
decent texture you have to either use the pickle juice or add
a bunch more mayo, like an order of magnitude more.
