If you listen to the announcers doing the grovelling, the studies have
shown that the most effective way of raising money and increasing the
donor base for public radio/TV is the on-the-air pledge drives.  Which,
they say, is why they resort to it....

I can live quite well without talk radio, public or not... I do,
however, see some point in having the music available to be turned on...
admittedly, I grew up with having classical stations (commercial in the
earlier days) on for the bulk of the day, as my mom listened to them.

I think our station generally does do better when they use less canned
copy... and it may be they are starting to pay attention to that... :)

Lots of people think that the end justifies the means... even when in
opposition to one's beliefs...  I guess I tend to mostly ignore the mail
appeals... unless I'm inclined to give at that moment... if they keep
sending, I can talk to the envelope as easily as to the announcer, and
remind that I've given already for the year or whenever... ;>  Most of
it goes directly into the recycle box, the return slip gets shredded...
No point in allowing myself to be guilted...  :)
