Ärende: egg-planting
====================
Hi Nancy,

NB> it could get NB>> warmer, stay around that, maybe take a little
 NB> dip... but I don't
NB> NB>> expect really cold for a while yet...

RH> A light windbreaker during the day and a slightly heavier jacket at
RH> night, especially in the Catskills.

NB> Probably... I just heard yesterday that they are predicting back into
NB> the 70's for Columbus Day monday... so, proper fall weather, pretty
 NB> much. :)

Good! We've had gray, drizzly weather the since Monday and no sun is
predicted until early next week. Temps have been in the low 60s--my
fleece jacket felt good today when we were out. I'll appreciate some sun
shine and warmer temps.

RH> Didn't need any jacket today at the
RH> farmer's market or other run around. I got a yellow squash (similar
RH> to patty pans), a butternut squash, a couple of tomatoes, a cucumber,
RH> an eggplant (regular purple), some sourwood honey and a couple of
RH> empinadas filled with kale, cheese and peppers.

NB> Nice haul... :) Haven't seen the local pattypans show up here yet...
 NB> I rather like them... :)

Gaby (produce lady) said to take tops off, scoop out seeds, fill with
stuffing (your choice), put top back on and bake. I'll try it when we
get back. Most of the produce went into a "use it up" stir fry tonight.

NB> family rule NB>> was "no-thankyou" portions... had to have a little,
NB> if you didn't like NB>> it that was ok to not have more... if you
NB> liked it after all, you

RH> My parents would put a standard size portion on our plates, and expect
RH> us to eat it without arguing or complaining. As we got older and fixed
RH> our own plates, whenever possible we'd take a no thank you sized
RH> portion. Sometimes we'd get hollered at and told to take more--so we
RH> did but under duress. It just re-enforced our hatred of certain foods.

NB> Again, different families, different standards/patterns... Daddy
NB> usually served out all the plates, to make sure that it was
NB> "equitably" divvied out... if he knew that there was a dislike of

Dad served some things (usually meat, spaghetti) but we were all
responsible for taking a proper portion of potatoes and veggies. Mom
served out dessert.

 NB> something, he
NB> usually took that into account. But he did it even for the adult

No favorites, if we didn't like it, we still had to eat a full portion.
And, no seconds on meat unless you had seconds on veggie or potato to go
with it. Meat portions weren't that big to begin with so we hoped there
would be (but there weren't always) seconds.

NB> children... There was generally small enough portions as it was, that
NB> one would just eat what what was given... sometimes there were seconds
 NB> of the veggies... ;)

We pretty much cleaned up everything at the table, as I imagine your
family did likewise.

NB> NB>> Only time I remember it not being enforced was when Mommy fixed
NB> NB>> hominy, and even Daddy didn't like it... then we were allowed to
NB> NB>> leave the rest of the portion on the plate after the tiniest
 NB> taste... NB>> ;)

RH> Mom never cooked (except for eggs) foods Dad didn't like. She'd put

NB> The hominy, no one knew that we didn't like it until we tried... it
NB> was an experiment... since Daddy didn't like it, we didn't have it
NB> again... although she did try a few more variations to see if any
 NB> other ways
NB> would be more palatable... It was especially memorable since even
NB> Daddy didn't like any of the ways, so none of us had to eat anything
NB> than the tiniest taste... and it never appeared on the table again.
 NB> :)

AFAIK, my mom never tried hominy. She tried a sauerbraten once, out of
venison that was so gamey it wasn't good. Didn't discourage me from
trying a proper one later--quite often in restaurants and I make it at
least once a year.

RH> raisins in some things but he could pick them out (we weren't allowed
RH> to but I like them so that was a moot point). He never got a peanut
RH> butter sandwich but I had to eat them, even tho I hated them. So, he
RH> worked around his dislikes but didn't allow us to do so.

NB> Not that untypical... but rather unfair all the same...

I know, but I don't have to eat peanut butter now. (G)

NB> RH>> And the times when you go, not really knowing what you want, and
NB> RH>> ending up with a lot of odds and ends begetting the "now how am
NB> I RH>> going to use all this?" feeling.
NB> NB>> One does have to be careful of that... :)

RH> I'm going to do it with some fridge odds and ends this week.

NB> A potentially fun time in the kitchen... :)

Get to be a cut up--of this and that! My veggie and fruit drawers are
almost empty now, will be tomorrow.

NB> NB>> ... "And so I thought to myself..." but who else can you think
 NB> to?

RH> Ever watch Emeril LaGasse when he says "so I said to myself (in
RH> talking about what to do with a certain food) .......... 'self'
 RH> ..............."?

NB> I think I have managed to see that... when MJ had the Food Network
NB> on... I've actually done the same thing... <G>

I've not, and haven't watched Food Network in a good while. Don't really
miss it most of the time either.
