That's how I view them too.  Some local store employees think they are a 
means for some people to try and cheat the store however.  I'm glad to hear 
commissaries are a lot more accomodating.

I'd use a bottle of stout while I was it it, but otherwise it sounds about 
normal.  The beer adds extra flavor without the salt from canned beef stock 
or the like.

Quite possibly.  It's newer than the one they used to have in my church 
kitchen however; that thing still had some mechanical parts.
