DD> My favourite Girl Sprout cookies are, of course, the Thin Mints (of

DD> what the local Girls in Green get). Second favourite is the Lemonades.
RH> We don't shop Walgreens for several reasons but by the same token,
RH> we've not bought Girl Scout cookies in a number of years. The heads
RH> have changed it too far from its original intent for our liking. I'm
RH> going to stop there, lest I rant, but I'd not let a (grand) daughter of
RH> mine join the program as it is now.

ML> The objection I have to scouting is the commercialization.

Welcome to America - Land of the Fee where everything is for sale to anyone
with the right price.

ML> And the cookie program has gone from being a way to pay
ML> for community-benefiting activity to a profit center for
ML> third parties. We need not talk about the focus changes
 ML> in the organizations themselves.

Welcome to America - Land of Political Correctness, as long as there is a
profit in it.

DD> I, on the other hand refuse to shop CVS for anything. They made me mad
DD> nearly twenty years ago and I vowed at the time - quite loudly even if
DD> not laced with profanity - never to give them so much as a penny of my
DD> money. EVER! So far I have held to that. My friend Howard, who is
DD> Walgreen's floating pharmacy supervisor has been trying to get me to
DD> buy my scripts there. But, I have a small family pharmacy in a nearby
DD> town with which I do my business. They took care of me when I didn't
DD> have *any* insurance and I see no reason to change now that I am
DD> covered by Part D of Medicare. Besides, they have an operating soda
DD> fountain (even if I don't patronise it) which is way cool.

ML> But it's this very multistate conglomerate predatoriness
ML> that makes me use CVS for every prescription - it means that
ML> I can get my scrip filled the same in Arkansas as I did in
ML> Rhode Island last time, with no questions about the insurance
ML> coverage. I admit the expansion has grown to the degree that
ML> halfwits abound in the system, but it beats having to get the
ML> doctor involved in transferring information every month or
 ML> three among far-flung pharmacies.

Walgreen's is more ubiquitous than CVS - Walgreen's began as a 50-by-20 foot
drugstore in Dixon, Illinois in 1901. The small business started by Charles
Walgreen has since grown to become America's largest drugstore chain. The
company has more than 7,000 locations in all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and
Puerto Rico. Walgreen's sells a variety of items including over the counter
medications, cosmetics, food, toys, housekeeping supplies, seasonal items and
more. Walgreen's is also a full-service pharmacy for prescription medications.

CVS Pharmacies are the retail pharmacy division of CVS Caremark, the second
largest pharmacy chain in the United States. CVS was originally part of
Melville Corporation. The name CVS stood for Consumer Value Stores, but the
initials eventually became the official name in 1996. Today the company
operates 7,000 stores in 45 states and in Puerto Rico. The store sells a
variety of merchandise including over the counter drugs, cosmetics, photo
supplies and processing, greeting cards and food. CVS also operates a
full-service pharmacy. The company recently purchased Longs Drugs, another
retail pharmacy chain.

These days both are mass merchandisers with a pharmacy tacked onto the back of
the store. And around here if you see one brand the other will likely be right
across the street or at worst within a block. Except for the five states where
CVS has no presence.
