NB>> And, I read that you were safely in Montreal, so everything worked out
NB>> smoothly after all... :) Welcome back... ;)
ML> It was in the minus F when we got to Montreal, which is
ML> not usually so awful, except that there was a biting wind
 ML> to go with.

Yes, isn't the weather simply Mah-velous...!!? ;>

ML> Instead of seeing the sights, we spent most
ML> of our time in the so-called Underground City, about half
ML> of which is not underground at all. It's a series of
ML> office buildings, residences, and shopping centers
ML> connected by passageways some of which are below ground
ML> but many of which are not - some even on higher floors.

A number of northern cities have done some similar doing... could you
see any of the sights from a distance from the above-ground
passageways...? When Rochester had a similar setup, those were glass,
so one could possibly see something of downtown... ;)

ML> It was lengthy enough to amuse for a day or two, but we
ML> had to surface to get to this one restaurant that I like,
ML> L'Express, where I had the not-pristine kidneys in very
ML> good mustard cream, and I pretty nearly froze going the
ML> quarter mile above ground to get there.

Was it worth the trek...? :)

NB>> So all was well. :) Was this in Canada or in the US...?
ML> Both, sort of. Various countries that have much traffic with
ML> the US have made an arrangement with US Customs and Immigration
ML> where it takes jurisdiction over part of a port or airport. So
ML> this was physically in the Montreal airport, but after some
ML> arbitrary point, all the staff are US officers of various
ML> affiliations. Practically speaking, it means that we are
ML> processed at the remote location and then are deemed clean
ML> enough so our flights can drop us off at domestic terminals
ML> back in the US. The phenomenon occurs in the bigger Canadian
ML> cities (ones with international airports); I encountered it too
ML> at Shannon in Ireland and in at least one Caribbean port.

I'd encountered similar at Toronto (which I saw on your list of the
facilities offering the service). I could have flown there/back from/to
Rochester, but as it was, I'd been driven to Toronto, and was being
picked up there. Of course, I also hit customs at the border... It's
been a while... I'm thinking maybe once I actually flew there/back, so
maybe that's when I went through customs in Toronto... :)

ML> Funny thing is that the CBP Website says that the foreign
ML> countries have to request these facilities and provide the
ML> infrastructure for them. I don't see what the advantage is
ML> for them; the advantage is to the US Government, which saves
ML> time and money, and the travelers, for whom return to the
ML> US becomes more or less a ...

Encourages the travelers to use their airports...? And apparently
simplifies travel when one is flying from a non-international airport in
the states through one of those as a hub...?
