By today's standards that is one h*** of a high standby power,
when you think that all it is doing on standby is wait for an
incoming ring or someone pushing one of the buttons, and keep the
clock running.

Sheesh! CMOS circuits should do a lot better than 100mA.

Yeah, it could be. These cells go completely open circuit after a
month or so. As the power breaks don't occur all that often, the
darn things are useless by the time they are needed.

I've now replaced them with four 650mAH Ni-mH cells, that should
last almost forever.

The interesting thing is that the car alarm remotes don't have
the batteries accessible for replacement. When my daughter's one
started to fail, she had to pay $70 for a new one.

I don't know how they programmed the new one to her car's code,
possibly they matched it to the code from her husband's remote, I
guess.

I have heard that if you lose your remote and don't have a spare,
the alarm system control box has to be replaced, at a cost of up
to $2000.

That shouldn't surprise me. Most auto electronic bits are
WAAAAAAY overpriced.
