 RJT> Yeah, but _that's_ flexible! :-)

GM> But probably not very efficient.

True.

GM> OTOH the armed forces never were too concerned about efficiency.
GM> That goes out the window when reliability, versatility, and fast
GM> response come into the picture.

It's all tradeoffs.

GM> Brute force usually gets more done, and faster <G>

RJT> Whatever law it is that decided that programmer's time was more costly
RJT> than the hardware it runs on.

GM> The law of economics. They'd rather save a few bucks now for
GM> themselves than have all the users save millions down the track.

Or something like that.

RJT> There you go. If you can deal with a command line then there's a lot
RJT> of usable power out there, cheap.

 GM> That's so true!!!

RJT> Yep. It sure is a shame that as much stuff gets into landfills as
RJT> seems to be the case...

RJT> I try and prevent that whenever possible, but there's only so much
 RJT> you can do.

GM> I have heard that it is now illegal to dump electronic gear into
GM> landfill, due to the stuff that leaks out of the components.

There are various levels of tree-hugger paranoia going around about that. The
minor bit of justification I can see for it involves lead content, but heck,
the lead came out of the ground in the first place, didn't it?

GM> But do you see any garbage collectors checking the household bins
GM> before they are emptied into the truck? Or someone checking the
GM> contents of the truck when it is emptied at the fill site?

They've had recycling around here for a while. Some time back they decided
that it was gonna be "mandatory". They do provide bins to put the stuff in,
and we have a couple of them. Things like plastic beverage containers make up
the bulk of it for us, and those can be readily discerned through the plastic
bags normally used. I've thrown electronics out and they've taken it, no
problem. In the most recent instances, that consisted of some old terminals,
which had the circuit boards removed, and some keyboards.

I'm not real worried about it, and I'm sure as heck not going to pay a fee
($10?) each time I want to throw out some electronics, I hae *way* too much of
it for that to be practical.

GM> We have one solitary service over here for collecting old paint,
GM> garden poisons, and other noxious matter that you're not allowed to
GM> dump. But its collection depot is located way out on the edge of
GM> the suburbs. And it is open only between 10am and noon, one day a
 GM> month.

That's the sort of thing I *would* deal with that way, if I had any to dispose
of. But I don't.

GM> Anyone wanna guess where most people dump their noxious waste?

 GM> No prizes...

Heh.
