Fidonews Echo

Section 1:  General Rules

1.  This echo is for the discussion of anything related to
Fidonet, the posting of Fidonews by the Fidonews editor, and
anything related to Fidonews.

2.  If you post here, you MUST post under your real name.
If you don't and we find out, you will be asked to leave.

3.  When quoting of the message you are replying, quote
enough to get the entire idea of the post across, but not
all.  Posting two pages of quoted text for a one line reply
is a waste of time for everybody.

4.  Stay on topic.  The subject line is to help people
follow a thread over a period of time.  If you make a right
turn and go off on another subject without changing the
subject line, it makes things hard on all of us trying to
follow along.

5.  Act like a reasonable person in your posts.  Tempers
rise, toes get stepped on, etc.  People play hardball when
it comes to defending their ideas.  Try to make allowances
and things will go much smoother.  The moderator reserves
the right to stop a thread to calm things down.

6.  Moderator rulings are final.  Wholesale discussion of
such rulings is off topic and prohibited.  If you feel you
have a legitimate axe to grind, either send netmail, or give
the moderator YOUR netmail address and ask him to contact
you outside the echo.

7.  Certain individuals may have or may possibly be banned
from this echo for repeated violations and blatant disregard
for the rules. Posters are not to post messages TO OR ABOUT
those individuals by name in the echo, and should not reply
to any of them who post here in defiance of a ban. If you
see someone posting who is not to be here, notify the
moderator via netmail or email.


Section 2:  Specific Rules

1.  Attacking any person because of their affiliation with a
zone or country is prohibited. Attacking any country or
person by posting obvious lies and innuendo is prohibited.
Such issues can be broached in a manner that leads to a
constructive discussion, but doing so merely to inflame the
other posters and disrupt the normal operation of the echo
will not be tolerated.

2.  Personal attacks on other posters are prohibited.  If
you bring up something about a poster's family, their job,
their religion, their national origin, or their race that
does not have a direct bearing on the issue being discussed,
you will be asked to leave.

3.  Discussing what occurs in other echos may be relevant
news to the Fidonews echo.  However, carrying a discussion
from another echo to Fidonews is frowned upon. If you are
having problems with some other echo moderator that is
between you and that other moderator and not appropriate for
discussion here.

4. Racial slurs will not be tolerated whether in discussion
or when used belligerently.  If a racial slur is used in the
echo, the person who wrote it will be asked to leave
immediately.

5. Moderator rulings are final.

General Policy Statement:

These rules are for the most part the same common sense
rules you use when talking to somebody face to face.  When
you get the urge to unload on somebody, stop to think if
you would say the same thing to them if you were standing
there face to face.  Most likely you would tone it down to
avoid a fist fight.  Well, it works here, too!

The moderators have opinions too, and will express them as
individuals. We do our best not to let our personal feelings
interfere with moderator duties, so keep that in mind before
you make an accusation of the moderator playing favorites or
other such nonsense.  We also make mistakes just like
everybody else.

FidoNet is a hobby network.  The people that provide Fido
BBS services and provide the means to move these echo
conferences do so on their own dime.  It is also a system
based on the honor system.  For it to work and survive,
everybody needs to be prepared to live by that idea.  If a
moderator (not just here but in any echo) gives you a
vacation, take it like an adult.  If you feel you've been
wronged somehow, there are procedures in Fido to try to
resolve your differences.

Don't make life hard for the rest of the users by carrying
on a vendetta against the moderator in the echo.  I plan to
follow Fido procedures to the best of my ability, and I
expect others to do so as well.  I'm sure Stan agrees with
those sentiments.

Further rules will be added as needed, and current rules
will be updated and modified as necessary.  Hopefully those
rules above are more than enough.
