Ferries are a great way to go, that is my opinion. There used to be several
crossing the river Scheldt in the south of the Netherlands and they have been
replaced by tunnels. Traffic is faster but I enjoyed the 15 minutes on the
boat, it was something different. You can take a few minutes to look around,
enjoy the scenery, the birds, the seals which are returning into the estuary.
 
None of that all with a bridge or a tunnel.
 
I also understand the other side of the story for the people at Ketchikan for
whom such a ferry has nothing idillic but is a waste of time. Not only that
however ... in many instances during autumn, winter and springtime the ferry
simple does not run due to adverse weather-conditions ... very dense fog ...
rain so dense it is like a closed-curtain, snow, ice, ...
 
I'm not expressing a position here, just adding my 2 cents worth. I'm certain
that economically such a bridge does not make sense.

No, but plans do exist. There is a not-unimportant bird-sanctuary there. First
I'd like to go to Prudhoe Bay and Deadhorse at the Beaufort Sea. People there
keep warning me that there is nothing there to see, I disagree on that.
 
Now don't take this wrong, I enjoyed knowing immediately what you were talking
about and could identify the exact location and issue. I do read the electronic
edition of the Anchorage Daily News to keep myself updated on "Things Alaskan".
