I wouldn't buy Starrett tools. I bought Lufkin when they were still in
business, then graduated to Brown and Sharp. Since then, I've been
supplementing with Mitutoyo...

JY> I have one of those, it has a dial on it, too. :-)

I have several...6", 8" and a 12"...used to have a 24" with a vernier, but
couldn't find glasses strong enough to read the lines after a while. Had
to call Nancy out to the shop and have her read it.

Do you still have Deere tools in that box?

I used to have a few other Channelocks, but replaced them with Vice Grips.
They're not as big, but they do the job.

JY>>> Those 4 must be the metric Channellocks..

 RW>> Aren't all of them?

JY> Nope, some are old enough to have been made under SAE regulations.
 JY> <g>

Hmmm. I had no idea they'd change the forging dies just to switch to
metric.

JY>>> I also have real wrenches..

JY> I have threatened to buy some roll-packs for the wrenches.

They're handy. I like the ones you get with Craftsman wrenches, it's a
tool rack with a plastic pin down the center, which holds the wrenches in
place until you need one/them.

JY> The quarter-drive sockets are on those cute little "socket-sticks"

I have my 'chinese' sockets on those. They're easily tossed in the
car/truck to be handy when they're needed.

JY> and the most-used sockets are in a loaf-pan in the top of the tool
JY> cabinet in the truck; I mark the size of the sockets with a
 JY> paint-pen; have to redo them about once a year but it's a time-saver.

I have one of those pens in my tool box, but I use it to mark material, so
I know what it is when I go to the scrap pile to find something like it.
Magic markers don't make it for very long and rubs off the first time
someone touches the metal.

JY> I have several different brands of SAE wrenches and since I've had
JY> them so long I recognize them by the general shape and patina, not by
 JY> the actual size.

I have wrenches that I haven't used in years, and the only way I can
recognize what size they would be is to use my 'precision eyeball'..I
usually get the right size the first time.

JY> My metrics wrenches, however, are all the same brand and they all
 JY> look alike, literally.

Yeup. I bought Craftsman and they're identical, accept for the size.

JY> Almost as bad as trying to sort therough a drawer full of loose Allen
 JY> keys.

That's why I keep my wrenches in the portable racks. The same with my
hex wrenches. I use Bondhus since they're easier to use because they have
a ball on the end for easy insertion and you can get at any bolt that may
require an angle to reach it. They too come in a handy plastic carrying
case.
